Talk to students April 2001

The last couple of months of 2000 saw a few changes at karate. The most important are:

  • Joining Shukokai World Karate Union in Japan.
  • The new WKF rules came into effect.

All these are positive changes, and we are in a position to make the most of them. Guys you must be proud of your dojo. Your sensei has got your interest at heart, his students come before himself.

We are very fortunate to have Sensei Dave as our sensei. At his Third dan grading, in 1978, he undertook to develop himself to enable his students to be developed to their fullest.

He wrote: "By doing karate and studying 'the way' it made me realize that nothing of real value could be achieved without determination and a great deal of effort. You get out of karate what you put into it. The only way to improve is through constant practice and spending many many hours of training and sharing in the dojo, developing mind and body.
Children, through their innocence, determination, energy and concentration have over the past years given the incentive to improve my own level of karate.

We teach by example, therefore there is a great deal of responsibility attached to self development, so that I could set examples to others.
I try to develop relationships with those above and below me within the discipline.

Sensei Dave is one of the highest qualified people in the country, as an international referee. Denise, his wife is the only qualified tournament official in Natal. Now that I think is something to make us all proud. When we enter tournaments we know what is expected from us and we know how the new rules work, and Sensei Dave is making it possible for us to excel at championships. How many other clubs on the South Coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal do you see entering championships?

Lets make use of the opportunities that come our way, lets train hard and give a little back of what we get out of karate. By training and having enthusiasm with a positive attitude, makes it worthwhile for our sensei to give us more, then he knows that we appreciate him.

Hallo All,

This was a term full of exiting happenings. On the 2nd June there were a brown and black belt grading in Durban. Congratulations to the following students who had passed their grading.

a. Hylton Rosenberg 2nd Dan Black Belt
b. Pieter Tosen 1st Dan Senior From Jnr.
c. Izette Fourie 1st Dan Junior Black Belt
d. Shannon Mayne 1st Kyu Brown Belt
e. Nadine Aron 2nd Kyu Jnr Brown Belt
f. Max Aron 2nd Kyu Jnr Brown Belt
g. Rayn Mayne 2nd Kyu Jnr Brown Belt
h. Marnus Robertze 2nd Kyu Jnr Brown Belt

A gusshuku was held at T.O. Strand for all Black belts in our organization in South Africa. This was a very successful event. Sensei Masuyama from Japan attended and we were very fortunate to have him at our club on Tuesday 12th June. Some of our brown and black belts also attended the open sessions at T.O. Strand. We thank all our students for attending these classes and for your very well disciplined behaviour. Sensei Takeshi was very pleased with our club and students, we were proud to accept the complements on your behalf.

Also a big thanks to all of you who were there, the Thursday before, to help spring clean the dojo. You make us very proud.

At the gusshuku, on Friday and Saturday, there were gradings held.
Friday was 1st to 5th Dan grading, Sensei Masuyama awarded Christien her 3rd Dan.
Congratulations.
Saturday Sensei Dave went for grading (6th Dan), but his results will only be available in September at the Tournament.

There are changes on some of the kata, which we will be working on.
Classes during the holidays will be as follows:
Monday and Wednesdays: 17h00 to18h00 for all juniors.
Tuesday and Thursday: Normal time.

The tournament in Cape Town will be held on the 28th and 29th September 2001 and we would like to send some of our students to participate. Any student can enter for kata or kumite or both. We have started fundraising events to help subsidize these students, as this trip could be expensive. (We will be travelling either by bus or by plane). We are waiting for information from Durban.
Guys, think about it, speak to your parents and most important - SELL THOSE RAFFLE TICKETS. It is big prizes we are raffling and we could make a substantial amount of money that will help toward our expenses for this tournament. If we do go by bus, we will have to leave the Wednesday before school close for the holidays. If we fly, we will have to leave Thursday.
All participating students will be given letters to school to explain that this is a national event and would be good for the school too if their pupils bring back medals.
Our Sensei had set the example by winning gold medals for both kata and kumite the past 2 years, if he can do it, why can't we try?

Sensei Takeshi Masuyama is bringing a team from Japan to participate in this tournament.

We have the following important dates:
7 July 2001 12h30: Demonstration by our club, at the Hibiscus Mall, Margate
Dates available soon: Selling raffle tickets at the Hibiscus Mall, there will be two different days.
21 July 2001: We have a table booked at Shelly Centre to sell raffle tickets
29 July 2001: Natal Shukokai Championship in Durban
5th August 2001: Development Tournament
2nd September 2001
: Natal All Styles Children's Championships.

GUYS, WE NEED YOUR HELP; THERE WILL BE SHIFTS ON THESE DAYS, PLEASE PUT YOUR NAMES DOWN TO HELP. WE ARE DOING THIS FOR YOU.

Konnichi wa,

At the end of September a team of 15 participants and 4 officials, from our karate academy, represented us at the annual Shukokai Karate World Union Ryushin-Kan championships.
We are proud to announce that they brought back 18 medals for our dojo. We secured 5 x Gold, 6 x Silver and 7 x Bronze medals and are very proud of our student's hard work.
The successful weekend was rounded of with a trip to Ratanga Juntion, which was enjoyed by all. On the way to Cape Town our bus broke down with water in the diesel tank, we spend 29 hours on the road but that didn't worry our kids as they made some good friends with the students from other clubs. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our parents who had given prizes for raffles or other sponsorships towards this trip, especially Aby from Promeats, who have sponsored a hindquarter, whole lamb and two R100.00 meat/biltong vouchers and Mrs Pat Hosmer for the beautiful collectors porcelain dolls.
Please return all raffle sheets and money by Wednesday 24th or latest Monday 29th October for the juniors, and Thursday 25th October or latest Tuesday, October 30th for the seniors.
The draw will take place at the dojo on Tuesday, October 30th at 18h30. Everybody is welcome to attend.

A provincial brown and black belt grading is to be held at Hillary dojo in Durban on Sunday 28 October 2001 at 10h00. Those who are participating, good luck and train hard.
We will also be having a grading for white to purple belts during November; as usual it will be during class time, but this time we will have the final and handing out the results and certificates on Saturday morning 17 November 2001 at 9h00.

We have had a full and busy year with two visits from the Japanese head of our organization, Sensei Takeshi Masuyama, we are very fortunate to have had this opportunity and our club can only benefit from these visits. It was a big honour to have been able to welcome Sensei Masuyama to our dojo, we are proud of our students who behaved very well and was very receptive to his teaching, although he does not speak English.

There are photo's on the internet, the link to the album is on our web page, visit us and see if you are there. Our year-end outing to Old Mac Donald's farm is planned for Sunday 2 December 2001.
The format is bring and braai from 10h00 onward and a prize giving at 12h00.
We will be giving trophies and/or certificates to the following students:

1 Most improved student of the year - floating trophy.
2 Endeavour and spirit - floating trophy.
3 Any student who received Natal Colours
4 Any student who received S.A. Colours
5 Attendance.

We are looking for sponsors for trophies, please let us know if you or anybody else can help.
Your assistance is always appreciated; also let us know if you would be interested in forming part of our fundraising committee.
Our "wish list" at the moment looks like this: A banner for the dojo, video and/or digital camera to record the new techniques from Japan for training purposes, Mats (Tatami) and a bus or kombi to help transport our students to and from tournaments / gusshuku.
Next year's annual Shukokai tournament might be held in Brits on a game farm at ± end September, and we would like to take as many of our students as possible.
We are putting a suggestions box in the dojo for those who would like to give ideas on how we could achieve this.
Yours in karate,
Christien (Sandan)

Class times are still the same as last year.
