Free Fighting Explained
Kata Explained

Sometimes described as the poetry of karate, kata is a systematically organized series of techniques performed in a set sequence. In addition to perfection of form, such factors as vigour, power and interpretation are also taken into consideration. Each kata may be viewed as a unit, and there should be a flow from one technique to the next.
It should be mentioned that kata is normally one of the most neglected areas of training and the one which causes the most failures in the intermediate grades. Kata take a long time to perfect. If you try to learn a kata only shortly before a grading, you will be unlikely to pass.

Elements to look for in kata are:

  • Yoi No Kisin - The spirit of getting ready
  • Chikara No Kyojaku - The manner of using strength
  • Wasa No Kankyu - The speed of movement
  • Kiai - Shouting, at set points to demonstrate the martial spirit.
  • Zanchin - Remaining on guard at the completion of the kata.

Free style sparring consists of a match between two persons. Each must both attack and defend, all the while attempting to get points by means of an appropriately placed punch, strike or kick, and blocking the opponents attacks to prevent him/her to score points.

Semi-Free fighting

This type of sparring is controlled, whereby one person attack and the other block and counter attack on the count.

Self Defence

This is were you learn defence moves to protect yourself against would be attackers.

Basics

Without a solid background of good basics, kata and free fighting cannot exist. Therefor a big part of training time is allocated to basic training. During these training sessions, you are taught the correct and effective way of stances, punches, kicks, strikes, etc...
