| I began Rye: 3D at the beginning of my 8th Grade year. I was very fortunate to obtain an Independent Study class with one of the middle school computer teachers who had been very helpful with my fully independent (not a class) project of creating the school in total using SketchUp. That was in 7th grade when our computer skills class (which are no more) introduced us to SketchUp, a semi-C.A.D program used for visualizations. Because it was an Independent Study, there was no ciriculum, so I had to make up my own. When I had finished my school project the year prior, a friend had joked with me, "So what are you going to do next? Rye?" The Central Buisness District (CBD) of Rye, NY is remarkably close to school. Students often walk into "town" after school and use the Rye Train Station to get to and from school daily. Building Rye's CBD would not be a bad idea, although it would be very dificult. Starting in our second class of the year in September, the teacher and I walked to the CBD and, using two yard sticks tapped together with a measuring tape attached to the top, we physically measured and took a photograph of every single storefront and building. This added up to more than 80 images and about 25 pages of measurements and notes. This process lasted through December 2004, at which time I began to, line by line, use SketchUp to draw resembaling images of the photographs I had taken. To see images, click here. The process of drawing on the computer lasted through the end of March 2005, at which time I added "pages" or snapshots of my 3D sketches and merged them into a movie format. In May, we invited school administration, Rye's Planning Department, the Mayor, and some city officials to a presentation of the movies at School. With that ends Rye: 3D, my Independent Study of 8th Grade. It was then that I was introduced to Rye's City Planner. We had a meeting in May and we felt that we could use my SketchUp work of the CBD to improve upon the actuall downtown of Rye. |
