| Dedication & Introduction To Opening Pandora's Box | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| People of Orphalese, the wind bids me leave you. Less hasty am I than the wind, yet I must go. We wanderers, ever seeking the lonelier way, begin no day where we have ended another day; and no sunrise finds us where sunset left us. Even when the earth sleeps, we travel We are the seeds of the tenacious plant, and it is in our ripeness and our fullness of heart that we are given to the wind and are scattered. Kahlil Gibran Lebanese-American artist, poet and philosopher from The Prophet. We dedicate our true-life story to Ali Omar's children from Denny Ryder as he used to call them Medusa, Quella de Ville, Dracula and Snow white. And from Ali Omar to Denny Ryder's mother. Wherever you are Souad it is for you. Introduction: DENNY RYDER was sitting in a London caf one warm July day in 2000 having a coffee and a cigarette. Two months short of his 56th birthday, he was still suffering in the aftermath of emotional trauma that had left him blind, with nerves jangling. Fumbling for a cigarette, he dropped his lighter. As he sat wondering what to do, he heard a voice say: "Let me help you with that, sir." He heard a chair scrape and a moment later, he felt someone place his lighter back beside his hand. "Thank you," he said. "Don't mention it," said the other man. Seeing that Denny was still rattled, he added: "Can I help you light it?" That was how Denny and Ali Omar met. Tentative polite chat developed into a broad-based and wide-ranging conversation. The two realised they had much in common; so much that, despite a 20-year age difference, they began to feel they had lived the same life. It was a revelation to them both. Ali, 36 when they met, is an industrial Chemist born in Lebanon. He survived internectine warfare, including injuries from three bombs. He became a freedom fighter at the age of twelve and suffered abuse as a child, but managed to escape from Lebanon to obtain a Master degree in the former Soviet Union and finally to work for an international pharmaceutical company in Geneva. A Muslim, he has lost friends and family to violence and extremism. Denny is English, an entertainer who lost his sight in a vicious mugging in London; the ninth time he'd been attacked. A post-war child from a privileged background he had also suffered abuse that scarred him emotionally. He survived two IRA bomb atrocities by minutes and the Nail Bomb in London. He also had to contend with a sexual assault on his daughter and the subsequent Court Case. Many of his experiences from working around the world could have come straight from the pages of a novel. He has been a restaurateur and club manager and was featured in the reality TV programme "Paddington Green". Denny and Ali found amazing parallels in their lives and in the details that they had both tried more of less successfully to bury. These were not happy episodes, rather periods of life that one simply survived in a world full of greed, wars and sexual indifference; periods of adjustment in different countries, different cultures and religions. The concept is highly political since September 9/11. The building of bridges between the Middle East and the Western World is totally paramount in the book and their beliefs in life and what life has to offer sometimes is hard and cruel. But with their honesty, integrity and their passion for "Opening Pandora's Box" the truth without fear of hypocrisy will come through. This is their story........... |
