Bob Reid (Earl Hindman)REID, Bob
Portrayer:
Earl Hindman (1975-1984, 1989)
Robert 'Bobby' Reid grew up very poor. His father was a mental patient, while his mother worked herself into an early grave. As a result, Bob was alone in the world with his baby sister, Delia, when he was only in his teens. Bobby grew very close to the Ryan family, and Frank Ryan became his best friend. Together, Frank and Bobby became police officers. When Frank decided to run for office, Bobby worked as one of his campaign officers. He joined Frank in Washington, D.C., when Frank became a senator. After Frank was forced to leave Washington, Bob became manager of Delia's Crystal Palace, a very swanky establishment that his sister ran. Although he was a good friend to everyone, he was never very lucky in love - he yearned for Mary Ryan and Faith Coleridge in vain, while his relationships with Alicia Nieves and Polly Longworth went nowhere. In 1989, something very lucky occured to him - he won the lottery!

Portrayer:
Richard Backus (1980-1981)
Barry Ryan was a Ryan cousin from Chicago. He came to Riverside in 1980. Barry became the talent managers for Broadway star Kimberly Harris and ailing rock star Ken George Jones. He also became involved with Delia Reid Ryan Coleridge; the two were engaged. However, he was two-timing Delia with a woman named Lily Darnell. When Delia found out, Barry promised he'd stop the affair. One night, Lily came over to Barry's apartment, and he explained to her that their fling had to end. He escorted her outside and kissed her; meanwhile, Delia watched them. Delia became infuriated and hit Barry with her car. Barry was seriously injured and did not find out about Delia's involvement in the crime until months after the fact (Delia framed drunken Faith Coleridge). In the summer of 1981, he joined the staff of Delia's Crystal Palace. A few months later, he decided to move back to Chicago.

While growing up, Delia Reid was a very lonely and confused child. Her father was confined to a mental hospital, while her mother worked herself into an early grave. Her older brother, Bobby, had to take care of her. During this time, she often sought solace with the Ryan family, and they became like a family to her. While she was in high school, she went out with their youngest son, Patrick Ryan. She wanted to marry him, but he wanted to pursue a career in medicine instead. Due to this, Delia turned her attentions to the oldest Ryan son, Frank. Frank and Delia were married in 1970. While Frank was studying to become a lawyer, he began to have an affair with lawyer Jillian Coleridge. When Delia found out about this, she decided to have a son in order to hold onto Frank. However, in July 1975, Frank encountered Delia on a staircase in Riverside Hospital and told her that he wanted a divorce. In a fit of rage, Delia pushed him down the flight of stairs. Frank almost died, but he decided to cover up Delia's crime. Delia and Frank tried to fix their marriage, but she began to have an affair with Dr. Roger Coleridge. When Frank found out, he divorced her. Delia then set her eyes upon getting back Patrick. In December 1976, she seduced him and became pregnant with his child. When Patrick found out, he decided to marry her; unbeknownst to him, Delia had actually miscarried her baby weeks before their wedding. During her marriage to Patrick, Delia did a number of things to attract his attention, including faking a miscarriage and faking a mental breakdown. Pat eventually turned to drugs, and, during an argument, he accidently pushed her down a flight of stairs. Delia became temporarily blind, but she quickly regained her eyesight; however, she continued to fake blindness. When Pat found out about all her lies, he divorced her. After this, Delia really did go insane, and her former lover, Roger, took her in. Roger helped her lose her dependence on the Ryans, and the two were married in October 1978. Delia began investing in stocks, which did very well. Unfortunately, Delia's business savvy began to take its toll on the marriage. After Roger thought Dee was cheating on him with her broker, he divorced her. Delia, meanwhile, opened her own restaurant - The Crystal Palace. She also became involved with Barry Ryan, but when she found out he was cheating on her, she ran him over with her car and framed drunken Faith Coleridge. Meanwhile, due to financial restraints, Dee was forced to sell her Crystal Palace to mobster Joe Novak. The Crystal Palace closed in 1982 due to financial restraints. Delia left Riverside in November 1983 after getting a job offer; in reality, this offer was made by her ex-husband Frank, who wanted her out of Riverside so she wouldn't try to get custody of their son. Delia returned six months later with a new husband - oil tycoon Matthew Crane. However, she was cheating on him with Steven Latham. When Matthew found out, he promptly divorced Dee. Delia left Riverside once again in December 1984 and moved to California. Delia returned to Riverside in 1986 for the christening of her grandson. Delia set her sights on her ex-husband, Roger Coleridge, and did her best to seduce him despite the fact that he was married to Maggie Shelby. Delia even had pregnant Maggie kidnaped, and, in a twist of fate, had to deliver her baby, Olivia. After Maggie left Riverside to take care of her mother, Delia and Roger reconnected. They were re-married in January 1989.

Reporter Elizabeth Jane Ryan, a member of the Chicago branch of the Ryan family, came to New York to stay with Johnny and Maeve Ryan. Once in New York, she set her sights on becoming a reporter and received much aide from reporter Jack Fenelli and newspaper owner Rae Woodard. Elizabeth also began to fall in love with Dr. Roger Coleridge. Around this time, Roger was being sued by soap opera star Barbara Wilde for malpractice; EJ helped prove her allegations to be false. Roger and EJ's love grew, and the two were engaged. However, Elizabeth stood up Roger when she found out that she was still married to her first husband, racer Ox Knowles. Roger and EJ's relationship ended with this revelation. After her split with Roger, Elizabeth tried to reconnect with Ox, but it was no use. Elizabeth returned to Chicago in September 1982.

Frank Ryan was the golden child of the Ryan clan. He was a great student in school, and, like many of his ancestors, Frank joined the police force after graduating from high school. He married Delia Reid in 1970. Around 1972, he also began attending law school at night; he began cheating on Delia with his instructor, Jillian Coleridge. In order to hold onto Frank, Delia had his child, John Reid Ryan, in 1974. Shortly afterwards, Frank began running for a position on the city council. His dreams were almost ruined, however, when Delia pushed him down a flight of stairs after he told her of his intentions to divorce her. Frank was in a coma for weeks; he did not tell his family until long afterwards in order to protect them from the horrible thing Delia did. Although temporarily paralyzed, he continued running for office and won; he eventually regained full use of his limbs through physical therapy. Frank and Delia began to make their marriage work, but he left her again after he found out she was having an affair with Roger Coleridge. Frank and Jillian began their relationship anew, and Frank was overjoyed when she became pregnant with his child. However, in March 1977, she informed him that it was not his son - the father was Seneca Beaulac, who Jillian had slept with while Frank was taking another stab at marriage with Dee. Frank was furious and left her. He worked on getting re-elected to the city council; in late 1977, the Woodards made plans for him to run for the Senate. As Frank's Senate campaign went underway, he found out from Jillian that he was the father of Edmund, her baby - Seneca had lied to her about who the father was! Frank and Jillian became engaged, but jealous Rae Woodard wanted Frank to herself. She undermined their relationship and began an affair with him; Jill left Frank after finding him out about it. Frank was elected to the Senate in November 1978. Tragedy struck him when Edmund was killed in an explosion at the Coleridge beach house around the same time he entered the Senate. A grief-stricken Frank became engaged to Rae. The engagement did not last, and, in revenge, Rae caused a scandal that ruined Frank's life in the Senate. Returning to New York, he once more fell in love with Jillian, but their relationship ended (again) when he found out she was having an affair with rock star Ken George Jones. Frank then began dating Jill's sister, Faith Coleridge, and the two were engaged. However, Frank realized he still loved Jill and ended his engagement. Soon afterwards, he left New York City to work with some clients in St. Louis. Frank returned to Riverside in February 1983 and immediately began work on another political campaign - this time for a seat in the House of Representatives. However, Rae Woodard and the MacCurtains both wanted revenge on the Ryans, and his campaign was ruined when a mysterious woman, Charlotte Greer, showed up and claimed to be his wife from whom he had swindled a great deal of money in St. Louis. He was shot by Una MacCurtain, and, on his death bed, he finally married Jillian Coleridge, whom he had been seeing again. Fortunately, Frank survived, but his marriage to Jill was strained due to his feelings for Jill's half-sister, Maggie Shelby. Frank and Jill eventually made their marriage work, although it took a tumble when Jill disappeared and lost her memory; she had an affair with Frank's half-brother, Dakota Smith, while she was gone. Frank and Jill worked out their differences, however, and they had a child together in 1986 - Mary Ryan (named for Frank's dead sister). Around this time, they were also blessed with a grandchild - Owen Ryan, son of John Reid Ryan and Lizzie Ransome. Towards the end of the show's run, Frank began to have aspirations for running for office again.

Portrayer:
Bernard Barrow (1975-1989)
Johnny Ryan grew up in New York City; his family was poor. At a young age, he became a boxer; during World War II, he joined the army and was stationed in Ireland for a time. There he met Maeve Colleary, and the two were married in 1944. Once they were in New York, they both worked at a local tavern. Together, they had a total of seven children together - Kathleen, Frank, Patrick, Mary, Siobhan, Sean, and Maggie. Sean and Maggie died while they were infants. In the sixties, the tavern was up for sale, so Johnny bought it and named it Ryan's. Johnny and Maeve watched as their children grew up and became involved with various people. In 1979, Johnny was forced to sell a portion of his bar to Delia Reid Ryan Coleridge. Unfortunately, in January 1984, the bar was blown up by the mob. Johnny and Maeve worked hard to rebuild the bar. In 1985, Johnny and Maeve's marriage hit a snag - his long lost son, Dakota Smith, showed up in town! It was revealed that many years before, when Maeve was visiting Ireland with her children, Johnny had a one-night stand with Meg Smith. Johnny and Maeve split up, but they eventually found their way back to one another.

John Reid Ryan is the son of Frank Ryan and Delia Reid. He spent most of his childhood living with his grandparents, Maeve and Johnny Ryan; his own parents tended to worry more about their own emotional crises than him. In 1986, a teenaged Johnno became a father when his girlfriend, Lizzie Ransome, gave birth to their son, Owen Ryan. Johnno and Lizzie dealt with many problems as a result, mainly due to Lizzie's abusive father, Harlan Ransome. In 1987, they became engaged; however, Johnno cheated on Lizzie with Dr. Concetta D'Angelo. Lizzie then left Johnno for Ben Shelby. Johnno then started seeing Nancy Don Louis. However, his relationship with Nancy was short-lived, as was Lizzie's relationship with Ben. Lizzie and Johnno reunited and were married.

Maeve Colleary Ryan grew up in county Cork, Ireland. During World War II, she met an American named Johnny Ryan, and the two were married. Maeve went to America with Johnny, where he tended bar at a pub. Maeve had seven children with him: Frank, Kathleen, Patrick, Mary, Siobhan, Sean, and Maggie. Sean and Maggie died as infants. During times of crisis, everyone in Riverside would turn to generous, reliable Maeve. In 1983, Maeve was involved in a terrible ordeal - Neil MacCurtain, a man she knew in Ireland, came to New York to get revenge on her family for an incident in Ireland that had led to his brother's death. Neil and Una, after having their daughter, Charlotte, ruin Frank's campaign for the House of Representatives, confronted Maeve on an abandoned dock. Una tried to shoot Maeve; instead, Frank was shot, and he almost died. In 1984, the entire family suffered through another ordeal when Ryan's was blown up by the mob. Maeve and Johnny quickly had the bar rebuilt. Sadly, Johnny and Maeve's marriage crumbled when she found out that he had slept with another woman, Meg Smith, many years before; in fact, he had fathered a child with Meg - Dakota. Although Maeve and Johnny eventually reconciled, she never warmed up to Dakota.

Headstrong like her father, Mary Ryan was the second youngest of the five children that Johnny and Maeve Ryan had. In 1975, she had just finished college when she met a reporter named Jack Fenelli. The two began a tumultuous on-again, off-again relationship. Meanwhile, she became a reporter at a local channel named Channel R. Jack finally proposed to her in the spring of 1976. They were then married in July in a wedding that almost didn't happen due to the disappearance of the groom (he had gotten drunk the night before). Their marriage was very rocky at first, but it seemed to be improving when Jack was involved in a very serious car accident that almost took his life and left him impotent. Their relationship became very strained, and her discovery that she was pregnant did not help matters. Jack finally decided to end their marriage and left Mary shortly before she gave birth to her daughter, Ryan. Mary continued to love Jack despite everything. Maeve finally got them back together by locking them both up in the basement of Ryan's. They were remarried in December 1977 and left for their honeymoon, for which they went to Ireland. Their marriage remained pretty happy from that point forward. As Mary became more and more busy, however, Jack began to feel lonely and almost had an affair with her sister, Siobhan. Shortly after confessing this to Mary, she was killed on the day of Siobhan's wedding to Joe Novak by the mob, who tried to make it look like a car accident. Jack was able to find out the truth, though. The spirit of Mary returned several times: in 1983, she tried to get Jack to move on and find another woman for him to love; in 1986, she returned in the form of a woman named Moira to help her daughter Ryan get married to Rick Hyde; and, in 1989, she returned to talk to Jack on the morning of his wedding to Leigh Kirkland.

Patrick Ryan was the jovial son of Johnny and Maeve Ryan. After he graduated high school, he chose to become a neurologist. He began working at Riverside Hospital in 1975 alongside Dr. Bucky Carter and Dr. Faith Coleridge. A relationship developed between Pat and Faith, and Pat helped her to get past her shyness. However, Faith began to cling to Pat, so he dumped her. Faith was then kidnaped by Kenneth Castle, whom Pat rescued her from. Meanwhile, Pat began to defend Delia Reid Ryan, his brother's wife, to his family. Dee had been Pat's girlfriend in high school, and when her marriage to Frank Ryan fell apart, she set her eyes on him. Pat had a one-night stand with her and then chose to break it off. He resumed his relationship with Faith Coleridge, and Pat and Faith were engaged. However, Pat married Delia after she revealed to him that she was pregnant with his child. Dee lost the baby a few days before the wedding, although she failed to inform Pat about this. Meanwhile, a lack of funds at the hospital caused them to make their doctors work long hours. During one of his shifts, Pat, half-exhausted, accidently misdiagnosed a case and almost caused his patient to die. As a result, a letter of reprimand was put in his file. The doctors of Riverside Hospital had finally had enough and started a strike. The hospital gave into their demands; however, during the strike Pat became hooked to pills in order to keep himself awake. Going through withdrawals, he accidently pushed Dee down a flight of stairs. Dee was blinded temporarily. Maeve and Johnny gave Pat and Dee tickets for a cruise; during the cruise, Pat found out about all the lies Dee had told him (she faked a miscarriage, a mental breakdown, and blindness) and left her. Faith Coleridge, who he had been engaged to, however, had also married; even though he loved Faith still, he knew it was over forever between them. Pat then became involved with Nancy Feldman, a Jewish friend of the Ryans. This caused a conflict between the Feldmans and Ryans, since neither family really approved of the relationship due to the religious implications. Pat left Riverside in September 1979 to move to San Antonio, where Nancy had also moved. Pat returned to Riverside in March 1982 after his relationship with Nancy ended. He romanced the wealthy Amanda Kirkland, but eventually he reconnected with Faith. He also set up the Riverside Clinic around this time. In February 1983, he was injured in a fire in Riverside Hospital after Rae Woodard tried to get some incriminating evidence from him. He had an out-of-body experience and began having psychic premonitions as a result. Pat and Faith's relationship ended once again in late 1983 when she left Riverside. Pat became involved with Melinda Weaver and the pair were married in 1986; sadly, their marriage ended in 1987 when she died from cancer. After Pat's period of mourning for Melinda ended, he fell in love with Dr. Concetta D'Angelo; the two were married in 1988. In early 1989, Faith returned to Riverside with a five-year-old daughter, Grace. In the very last episode, Pat asked Faith if Grace was his daughter; although she gave no answer, it was clear that Grace was, in fact, Patrick's daughter.

Siobhan Ryan was the feisty daughter of Maeve and Johnny Ryan. Throughout her life, she often found herself as the odd Ryan out. She left Riverside in 1975 due to a feud with her sister, Mary. She then lived in Oregon, where she worked as a teacher. Siobhan returned to Riverside in 1978, and the feud with Mary quickly resumed. She worked for a time on Frank Ryan's Senate campaign, but this angered Mary a great deal due to the many mistakes Siobhan made. During this time period, Siobhan befriend Mary's husband, Jack Fenelli. Jack and Siobhan even ended up almost having an affair at one point. However, before anything really transpired between the two of them, Siobhan met and fell in love with Joe Novak, a man with a few mob connections. Joe and Siobhan were married in December 1979; on their wedding day, Mary's death was ordered by Joe's uncle, Tizo Novotney. In 1980, Joe faked his death to get away from the mob. Siobhan also found out about the mob's role in Mary's death and decided to leave Riverside. Both Joe and Siobhan returned to Riverside in early 1981 and decided to make another try at marriage. Siobhan decided to join the New York City Police Academy in late 1981. She left Joe after she found out that he was still involved with the mob. Despite this, Siobhan was still attracted to Joe. However, Joe was forced to leave New York after the mob ordered a hit on him. Siobhan began dating police officer Bill Hyde in Joe's absence. She began seeing Joe again when he returned to Riverside with a wife, Jacqueline Dubujak, whom he had been forced to marry by the mob. As a result of one of their trysts, Siobhan became pregnant with Joe's child, whom she named Sean. She was then devastated when Joe died as a result of a mob hit in France. After Joe's death, Siobhan fell in love with Max Dubujak, father of Jacqueline. The two were married in 1985. However, Siobhan was startled when she found out that Joe was alive. After Joe told her of Max's numerous mob connections, Siobhan and Joe brought Max down. Together, Joe and Siobhan left Riverside with Sean in 1987. After returning the next year, Siobhan started receiving strange gifts. They were from Max, and he wanted Siobhan back. Max was killed in a struggle with Joe. Before Max died, however, he planted a music box filled with explosives in Siobhan and Joe's house. Joe was killed by these, which devastated Siobhan. In the last weeks of the show, Siobhan grew close to Fenno Moore, a detective who had helped bring down Max. Together, they decided to open a detective agency together.
