Portrayer: Ana Alicia Ortiz (1977-1978)
Hispanic Alicia Nieves moved from Mexico to New York City at a young age. Unfortunately, her parents died in a fire, leaving her to take care of her little brother, Angel. Alicia became a paraprofessional in the OB Clinic at Riverside Hospital, where she first met Delia Reid Ryan, who was having a miscarriage at the time. After moving from the OB Clinic to Neurology, Alicia almost lost her job when she was accused of stealing money from a patient. All turned out well, and she even gained a new boyfriend in the process - Lt. Bob Reid, who had offered to help her prove her innocence. Soon afterwards, however, Angel became sick with meningitis, but it was misdiagnosed. Angel almost died, so as a result Alicia was forced to sue the hospital and Dr. Patrick Ryan, Delia's husband, for malpractice. In early 1978, Alicia left Riverside Hospital to work for Rae Woodard. However, Alicia quit in July of that same year when she discovered Rae in bed with Frank Ryan.

Mobster Joe Novak had a very tumultuous relationship with Siobhan Ryan. The two met in 1979. Soon afterwards, they became engaged despite rumors that Joe was involved with the mob, due to the fact that Joe's uncle, Tizo Novotney, was rumored to have numerous mob ties. On the day of their wedding, Tizo had Siobhan's sister, Mary Ryan Fenelli, killed when she discovered information concerning Tizo's criminal organization. When Mary's husband, Jack Fenelli, discovered this in the summer of 1980, he killed Tizo. Joe, not wanting to have to retaliate against Jack for killing Tizo, decided to fake his own death. In early 1981, Joe returned to Riverside, determined to go back to Siobhan and get revenge on Jack. He also bought Delia's Crystal Palace and worked under mobster Alexei Vartova. When Siobhan discovered Joe still had his mob ties, she left him, but they couldn't stay apart for long. Unfortunately, Joe had to leave town in early 1983 when he offended a very wealthy, powerful mob family. In late 1983, Joe returned -- this time he was married to Jacqueline Dubujack, who he had been forced to marry. Joe still could not resist Siobhan and got her pregnant with a son, Sean. Joe was injured in early 1984 when a bomb exploded in Ryan's Bar, so the Dubujacks sent Joe to a hospital in Europe. Joe escaped from the hospital, but his getaway car crashed, causing everyone to assume he had died. After Joe's second 'death,' Siobhan married Max Dubujack, who was the father of Jacqueline. Siobhan soon discovered, however, that Joe wasn't really dead! However, the car crash had disfigured his face, causing him to get plastic surgery. The two decided to expose Maxs mob ties. Max and Joe got into a struggle, and Joe killed Max. The two then left for Seattle with Sean, but returned to Riverside in 1988. Siobhan began to get mysterious gifts, and it turned out they were from Max -- he was alive and wanted Siobhan back! Joe once again killed Max, but he was killed in the process when a bomb Max had planted in their apartment exploded.
