Tom Desmond (Thomas MacGreevy)DESMOND, Tom
Portrayer: Thomas MacGreevy (1977-1979)
The Ryans and their friends first encountered Irishman Tom Desmond when he became Riverside Hospital's PR man in early 1977. Tom soon became a good friend of the Ryans, who, like himself, were also (of course) Irish. In particular, he grew very fond of Mary Ryan Fenelli, who had recently separated from her husband, Jack. However, he knew she still loved her ex-husband, so he helped them get back together. While they were still together, Mary learned a few odd things about his past -- his name had originally been Tom O'Brien, and he had been a former boxing champion. After he got over Mary, Tom soon began to have feelings for Faith Coleridge. More and more about Tom's past began to come out in a storyline which involved his feud with the Donahues of Ireland. The feud had started because his lover, Teresa Donahue, had died while trying to escape with him. After her death, Tom had a fight with her brother and accidently killed him. During this time, he married Faith in order to stay in the country. Faith became pregnant with his child; however, she lost the child after accidently getting stabbed in the stomache while on a houseboat with her former lover, Pat Ryan. The fact that Faith had been with her former lover at the time of her miscarriage set Tom off, and he began having visions of Teresa, who tried to convince Tom to kill Faith. The cause of this behavior was revealed to be a brain tumor. He was also plagued by blindness. During his blindness, his aide, Poppy Lincoln, looked exactly like Teresa, and she even tried to seduce Tom away from Faith. After Tom and Faith got past all this, they hoped for a happy future. However, it was not to be; Tom died in late 1979 after hitting his head.

Max Dubujack (Daniel Pilon) with Siobhan Ryan (Marg Helgenberger)DUBUJACK, Maxim
Portrayer: Daniel Pilon (1983-1987, 1988)
A man with several mob ties, Max came to New York to be with his daughter, Jacqueline Dubujack Novak. Max had arranged Jacqueline's marriage to her husband, Joe. While in New York, he became very interested in Jillian Coleridge Ryan, and the two almost had a fling. Max attempted to have Joe killed after finding out that he was having an affair with his ex-wife, Siobhan Ryan. He also forced Maggie Shelby to make love to him several times. During all of this, he was also blackmailing Sydney Greer because she had been his former mistress. Sydney was determined to write a memoir about her experiences with Max, but soon after announcing this she was found dead, having fallen from Max's balcony. Max was implicated in her murder, but it eventually turned out he had not killed her. Later on, Siobhan Ryan and Max became close and were married in 1986. At first, their marriage was happy. However, unbeknownst to both of them, Siobhan's ex-husband Joe was still alive and he wanted Siobhan back. Joe proved to Siobhan that Max was a criminal, and he got into a struggle with Max. Max was killed in this struggle. However, this was not the last of Max. The next year, Siobhan started receiving strange gifts. They were from Max, and he wanted Siobhan back. Max and Joe once again got into a fight, and this time Max died for real. However, Max got his revenge on Joe in death -- before he had died, he had planted an explosive-laden music box in Siobhan and Joe's house. Joe was killed by these explosives.
