2. How I do it
a. Dress down to underwear or slip
b. Wash face and pat dry. Apply sunscreen to all areas except face which will be exposed to sunlight today, for even the briefest moment. I try to get a scentless sunscreen with either parasol or zinc.
c. Add setting agent and roll up hair
(Recently my hair was cut in an angled bob which to me is very short. I skip this step, instead picking it out and refreshing the curls with water and pulling it back in a barrette if it will not cooperate)
d. Mix foundation with lotion and sunscreen so that there is only about a dime sized portion in your hand, if that. Rub it into face and neck. It should blend in imperceptibly or it is not the right shade.
e. While that is settling onto the skin, brush teeth
f. With the smallest brush, wet it and rub it into the black shadow. Line the eyes as if it were eyeliner - both top and bottom. Use a smudging brush to smear and soften the colour on the bottom of the eyes.
g. With a medium brush, apply the aubergine shadow, blending it in/over some of the black so that it progresses in colour naturally from one shade to the other.
h. With a larger brush, apply the light plum over the rest of the eye, making sure to blend it over some of the aubergine shadow so it progresses gradually from one into the other
i. With another, fairly small brush, highlight the very top and insides of eye with white shadow over the light plum.
j. The whole effect should be that it gradually progresses from black to white, through varying shades of plum/eggplant. There should not be a line of one colour ending and another beginning; it should be a very smooth fade. This makes for a mysterious look if kept fairly dark, and yet it can go into the professional world without anyone saying "Oh look at her freaky makeup!" if muted then with the facial powder.
k. If using them, apply lip and cheek colour. I do not.
l. Using a large brush applies the loose or body powder over entire face and neck. If going out, apply the sparkle powder to cheeks, neck and shoulders and shake over head to put into hair.
m. Apply deodorant and whatever scents you are wearing, and if necessary, apply lotions. I tend toward scented lotions so I only have to use one step to apply. I also tend to apply them at night and then just spritz the scent in the morning. Apply powders as necessary, here again, if possible I will wear a matching powder to my lotion and scent, I may or may not wear them all together depending on what I am doing.
n. Dress and then fix hair one final time and spray/sculpt as necessary.
3. Notes:
The makeup process should take no more than 10 minutes, if that. I take about 6 minutes and can apply it in the bathroom at work while on the toilet if I have no time in the morning; it's that easy once you know how to do it. One does not need to be sloppy; however it's not necessary to be really fancy either. The look I am going for is ethereal/mysterious and feminine. With a little practice with the technique, it's foolproof and very easy.
If you are fair of face or are trying for the stereotypical pallor, you can use regular baby powder instead of loose powder. Or you can take it and mix it into your regular powder to make it go farther. I do both. In the winter I am fair enough to wear it straight, in the summer I usually get a very light loose powder and mix them together so that there is no tell tale line which says where my makeup begins and ends.
There are white powders available at Hot Topic. I do not prefer the white cake powder made by Morbid Make Up. It crumbles when it's carried a lot. There is another brand called Gothic Make Up, "White Heat". What I like about this one is that it can also be used wet, which means it can be used as a foundation. I can use it as a foundation and then use regular coloured loose powder or I can use regular foundation and use this as powder and end up with a similar effect. This gives me more options in case things run out and are out of stock at my favourite stores.
Makeup is supposed to be thrown out every 6 months. I don't know about anyone else, but it is hard for me to use up the entire contents of my eye makeup case in that time when I only have one set of colours, much less many. Therefore I have discovered a look that works for me consistently so that I do not need multiple eye make up outfits in my makeup bag. This way rather than dispose of several shades which were barely used, I throw away three which are mostly used. I feel this is a better use of my money. Unless I am going out, I rarely use blush or lipstick. Therefore I chose them well and have one blush and two lipsticks. I do go through the foundation and powders so I do not worry about them.
