| Program Title: End of the Year Barbeque Program Summary: The JFSC wanted an end of the year program to bring together all of the Jewish students in the fraternities and sororities in a social way. They hosted a bbq at Alpha Chi Omega during one of the reading days before finals. Program Description: The students on the JFSC executive board, along with the representatives from the chapters planned an end of the year barbecue with burgers, hot dogs, chips and soda. Date: Wednesday, May 8, 2002 2-4PM Goals of Program: To bring together the Jewish students in the fraternities and sororities for an entertaining study break right before finals. Also, to raise awareness of the newly formed Jewish Fraternity Sorority Council. Meet Goals? Why or why not? YES. Between 30-40 students attended the barbecue. In total, members of seven chapters attended, four of which had never been to a JFSC event before. Everyone had a good time and it set the JFSC up for a successful start to next year!! Type of Program: Social Program Planned For: Greek Why Planned: For fun, to engage the greek community, to spread awareness of the JFSC Receive Grants: No How far ahead start planning: 2 months How much time involved: 6 hours People involved in planning: JFSC Executive Board (Jason Cohen, Michelle Mandell, Courtney Katz, Julie Nadler), Jen Buskirk-ZTA rep, Joel Davidson-ZBT rep, JCSC Fellow People who help plan: 7 People who help implement: 7 Expected attendance: 30 Actual attendance: 30-40 Budget: $150 for food and drinks Step by Step Process: See next page Forms of publicity: Flyers, word of mouth, Greek Forum Classified ad in Targum, Greek mailboxes Location: front yard of Alpha Chi Omega, 4 Union Street Jewish content presented and media used: none Suggestions for someone else: we had a lot of problems working out how to use a kosher grill. We used one of the portable ones from Hillel. It is important to note that you do not need a lot of charcoal to get a fire started. Also, make sure that all students who are buying food are aware of the kosher symbols. Lastly, keep the bbq in a shorter period of time because people come and go. That way, more students are there at the same time rather than smaller groups of students at any given time. Why or why not successful? The program was successful because many students attended and had a good time. It set a good tone for them all to continue to get involved next year! Impact of program: The students who attended learned that the programs of the JFSC are fun and enjoyable. It allowed them to hang out with other jewish students but did not push any sort of Jewish content onto them. Next year, it is important to involve these students in the planning of future programs. Students enriched? Impact it had: The students had a successful program where they live (on fraternity row-Union Street) with people they know (other members of the greek system). They are excited for similar future events. |
