The beginnings of SS Peter & Paul Church in Syracuse started with the establishment of St. Vladimir Brotherhood in 1915 (associated with the Russian Orthodox Catholic Aid Society) when immigrants of Russia, Poland and Austria-Hungary and of Orthodox faith wanted to establish a church to meet their spiritual needs. Services were originally held in temporary quarters but property was purchased on Park Ave in 1916. The property was transferred to the primate of the Russian Orthodox Church in North America. It then became SS Peter & Paul Church with its formal organizational meeting in July 1916. The church eventually moved to 401 Hamilton St, its present location, and was dedicated in 1927. It remained a Russian Orthodox Church until 1970. At that time the Metropolia entered into communication the Moscow Patriarch. The churches in North America were granted autocephaly and were renamed the Orthodox Church in America (OCA). Although SS Peter & Paul Orthodox Church is a much more ethnically diverse parish now than at its founding, there is still a significant group who reflect the original origins of the founders of the church. The church is sponsoring a Russian Festival to celebrate and preserve its heritage. The festival will be held on the church grounds. Ethnic foods, beverages and entertainment will be available. |
