Dikir Barat

Another form of Kelantan cultural entertainment is 'Dikir Barat' or 'Berdikir Barat'. It is a novelty that has come into the life
of the Malays in Kelantan after the Second World War. The 'Dikir' in Kelantan is of two types, namely 'Berdikir Barat' and 'Berdikir Lelaba'. When people who are interested or well versed in poetry or verses get together and form a group to ` Berdikir , then this is called ` Berdikir Lelaba . When two such groups meet in a friendly competition to match their respective poetic wits, then this is called ` Berdikir Barat. This friendly competition sometimes lasts the whole night.

`Berdikir Barat is actually a matching of wits between two teams, each composing not less than ten people, led by a leader called `Tukang Karut or ` Juara ( or usually callled in local dialect as ` Joro or ` Tok Joro. `Tok Joro main duty as the group leader is to compose ryhmes and poetry which are usually of love and the funny side of life, normally on impromptu basis. His other main task is to weave verses of ryhmes continuously for fifteen minutes or so at one stretch, r
ediculing and pinning down the arguements of the other team . It is the lively and witty mind of the leader that counts in such competition. In fact, it is a battle of wits.

The novelty of this form of entertainment is when they are performed in Kelantan local dialect.
However, this novelty seems to disappear automatically when they are performed
in non-Kelantan dialects. Today, ` Berdikir Barat has become one of the main items in many cultural shows in
Malaysia, particularly in Kelantan Darul Naim
