| EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS PROJECT |
Most disabled persons can generally access traditional emergency services such as shelters, food and clothing. However, the facilities and services provided in emergencies for the general public are unusable for those with chemical/electromagnetic intolerances. Already debilitated by severe chronic illness, most persons RDAF serves cannot tolerate conventional housing, public buildings with scented cleaning agents, air fresheners, carpeting, pesticides, molds and dusty ventilation systems. In a public shelter, persons are further exposed to respiratory and neurological irritants in commonly used products such as perfumes, scented body/hair products and laundry agents. Exposure to these substances can result in significant disorientation hindering the ability to breathe, speak, process instructions/directions and problem solve, all critical activities during an emergency. Thus, this population is at significantly higher risk for further illness and for death than the general public. Simply put, RDAF believes we must extend care to our own. In most cases, even loved ones are ill prepared to understand and accommodate, especially in an emergency. It is with this understanding that this project was born. *** |

As a result of the historic Rodeo-Chedeski fires of 2002 in Arizona, RDAF has developed an emergency resource network for persons who may become displaced from their homes as a result of fires or other environmental crises. RDAF, in coordination with New Horizons Independent Living Center in Prescott Valley and HEAL of Southern Arizona in Tucson, responded to the special needs of this population. Volunteers statewide provided rural and urban shelter. Donated funds solicted through online support groups and phone trees were used to secure medical supplies and equipment, transportation, organic food, bedding, attendant care and other necessary goods and services. *** |
