Who do the Japanese fisher-folk really think they are fooling?
Japan has already been
caught cheating over so-called scientific research into whaling, where DNA testing is reputed to have shown that they were killing endangered whale species, not just Minkey whales as claimed.
Now in worship of the not-so mighty Yen, they are unilaterally breaking a fishing treat with Australia & New Zealand over Southern Bluefin Tuna.
Southern Bluefin Tuna is considered to be an endangered species
by scientist in both Australia & New Zealand. To conserve the fish stocks Australia, New Zealand & Japan signed a conservation convention in 1994. The convention gave Japan 6,065 tons share of Southern Bluefin Tuna catch. Japan has over half of the total quota permitted catch of 11,750 shared between the three signatories.
Being a Northern hemisphere fishing nation, I do not believe Japan should be entitled to any catch is the Southern oceans. If the Northern hemisphere have not got
enough fish in their seas to meet their unsustainable appetites, why should they be allowed to plunder the Southern oceans as well? ( To be fair to Japan this argument is also applicable against
Norwegian whalers in the Great Southern oceans.)
Now Japan has sent 65 boats to catch an "experimental"
extra 1,400 tons of the endangered Southern Bluefin Tuna!! |
