Running Swift Kennel Racing Sled Dogs
About The Sled Dogs
Last Updated: Jan. 29th, 2007
Running Swift Kennel concentrates on producing top quality athletes. We have been running sled dogs for over 10 years now, and are loving it! We started out with Siberian Huskies, which we bred and showed, as well as ran as working sled dogs. However, after a few years, we found ourselves with our first Alaskan Husky, Granite and then a great Gee/Haw leader, Mars who taught us what it means to REALLY run sled dogs. Needless to say, here and there we picked up a few more Alaskans and discovered the thrill of adding some speed to our runs. Our Siberians were great, but these Alaskans really cooked and had wonderful attitudes!! We were completely hooked.  So, we packed up the kid, dogs and gear into our truck & trailer and headed out for the Last Frontier....Alaska! Since then, we've found ourselves breeding more into hound lines. Using our German Shorthaired Pointer, Radar, we bred a couple of our Alaskans with him to give us 1/2 pointer crosses. These dogs have proven to be excellent workers who bounce back very quickly with little rest. Our hounds have good coats and great feet that rarely need booties and have done well running in temperatures down to -40F. By adding a couple of pointer crosses from the Hollingsworth's IFSS 6 dog gold medal lines, as well as a few pointers from Taylor lines, Attla lines and Noatak Kennel, Nolke's and others, we hope to improve even more. Additionally, we've taken in a couple of SCL dogs who we have high hopes for.

Our kennel is relatively small, containing approximately 25-30 dogs. We are focused on mid-distance. Last season was rough on me, as I ran the Quest 300 and was stuck in a blizzard for 14 hours on Boulder/Rosebud summit after a back injury halted our progress. The same injury haunted me in the CC 200, coupled with sick dogs, forced me to scratch at the halfway point. This season, Devlyn will run the 2-dog class, while Manny & I both plan to do a few mid distance races, if time/weather permit. With the knowledge & experience we've gained over the years, we look forward to getting out there. Several of the dogs ran in the 2002 Quest 250 & the 2006 Quest 300, 2003 Denali Dash, 2003 Solstice 100 and the 2003, 2004 & 2006 Two Rivers 200, as well as many other races, gaining valuable experience for future seasons. Manny is hoping to work on his qualifiers for a bid in the '08 Yukon Quest. If you'd like to help us in our goals, please contact us at
