Questions For Canadian Athletes Being Recruited by
University Coaches
The questions following can be MODIFIED for ANY athlete from ANY
country.
RUNNING/TRAINING
Training philosophy?
Progression: Do you plan for progression over my four years there? Or
do you start me at the same volume/intensity as your fourth year runners?
Individual or group program?
What improvement have you produced in other athletes in my event?
Training partners: Who will my training partners be?
Where are distance runs performed? (Trails, parks, city streets etc?)
Speed development?
Strength development?
How do you handle regeneration/recuperation?
Mileage levels?
Do you expect everyone on the team to run a certain minimum mileage
level or do you look at each individual's unique needs, abilities, and
preferences?
Days on the track per week?
What events do you see me competing in, at this point?
Will I be able/allowed to try other events or will you restrict me
mainly to my specialty? For example, a 5,000/10,000m runner might want to
run the mile occasionally to develop his/her speed, but some coaches might not
allow that because the team already has plenty of milers who can run
faster.
Do you have training camps beyond the regular school terms (e.g.,
cross
country camp before school starts in the fall)?
Does the team go somewhere warm during March break for a training
camp?
Attitude towards me competing in summer? (ie. nationals, World
Juniors,
Summer Games Etc.)
Would you support me if a major Canadian event was coming up that was
important to me?
Canadians you have coached? Can I contact them? Do you have phone
numbers?
How have your athletes done after graduation? Can you give examples
of
athletes who have continued to develop in their event and have achieved an
even higher level of success after graduating? This can give an indication
of a coach's commitment to the long-term development of athletes ,
even if the athlete does not reach their peak until well after graduation.
A lot of coaches will try to get maximum performance out of an athlete in
the four years they are there at a cost of burning them out by the time
they graduate.
Sportsmedicine support: i.e. Massage, physio, nutrition, etc.
Iron status. Do you monitor?
THE SCHOOL/CITY
What is atmosphere on campus? Crime? Smog?
What is city like?
Climate. ie. Temp in Fall, Winter, Spring
Would I live in dorms? Is it a special athlete's dorm, or with
general
student population (the latter is preferable).
EDUCATION
Degree: Do you have the academic program or field of interest
that I want?
Injuries: Would an injury jeopardize my scholarship?
Are there NCAA restrictions on training hours per week?
Duration of School year? Competition Year?
Educational support? Tutors available? Counsellors for course and
major selection?
How marketable is a degree from your university in Canada? If
Canadian
employers are not familiar with the US university, then the degree MAY NOT
be considered to be worth much.
How many athletes on the team have gone on to med school, business
school, grad school, law school, etc.? What schools did they attend after
their undergraduate work was complete?
How are athletic/academic scheduling conflicts handled (e.g., an exam
is
scheduled the same day as a big meet)? Be sure to ask an ACADEMIC
OFFICIAL. Some schools do not have a policy concerning this issue,
thus the solution is left to the specific instructor thus policies will
vary from department to department and possibly class to class.
Is there a minimum SAT score I need to get into the specified
university?
OTHER
Team attitude? Fun group or serious on the track?
Are the athletes on the squad a nice group?
Does the team socialize together?
When does time for signing letter of intent occur?
Are you willing to wait until my SAT's are done? Can I take a trip
now?
