Comes With The Package
04/23/03

Anna walked into the small shop having no idea what she expected to find. A
sign taped to the front window claimed that it had a little something for every-
one and as she stood at the entrance looking around, she was confident that it
would be true in her case as well. The walls and shelves were packed tightly
from floor to ceiling with a wide variety of items. Some of it looked new and
some looked used, but all of it seemed to be thrown haphazardly together as
though the owner of the shop was merely trying to get the items out rather than
trying to make them appeal to anyone. This didn't bother Anna at all. She
actually enjoyed the flea market feel of the place, and the chance to rummage
through the junk in hopes of finding a gem appeal to her more than any super-
store outlet's neatly stocked shelves would.

She began wondering down the first aisle, looking this way and that at all the
stuff. Then something high up on one of the shelves caught her attention and
she reached up to grab it. From her viewpoint, it looked like a figurine of an ice
skater (something she had been looking for to add to a collection she was trying
to build), but as she brought it down to eye level she realized it was no ordinary
figurine, and it was definitely not a skater. As it dawned on her what she was
holding in her hand, a blush began to spread across her face. "Oh my God!" She
said in a low whisper and in her embarrassment she couldn't help to giggle a bit.
She stared at the object in amazement, then quickly set it down when she saw
movement out of the corner of her eye.

She looked up in time to see a woman and a young boy coming around the
corner of the aisle. The look on the woman's face as she began carefully and
quickly scanning the items on the shelves was one of almost comical deter-
mination. It was a look Anna had seen a hundred times before, mostly at garage
and rummage sales. This woman meant business. The boy with her just seemed
to be along for the ride. He quietly picked over the items on his level and moved
down the aisle keeping pace by the woman's side. Anna had only a second to
feel sorry for the little guy before she realized that the figurine she had just set
down would be right in his line of view.

She wasn't worried about the woman, but the horrid image of the boy finding
the small statue flashed though her head and she wondered how to remove it
from his view without seeming obvious. The two were close enough now that
they would see anything she picked up. So rather than risk being caught with
such an offensive object, she leaned down and while feigning interest in a lamp,
casually pushed figurine to the back of the shelf behind a box. She picked up the
lamp, pretended to examine it, then set it back down before turning to the items
on the opposite shelves.

The woman must have found something of interest because she stopped just
short of where Anna was now browsing. Anna didn't dare turn around, afraid
that the woman would see the guilty look on her face, but she did listen as the
boy rummaged through the lower shelves behind her. Still a bit flustered but
regaining most of her composure, she was about to sneak a peek at the pair
when she heard the little boy yelp.

"Look mommy! I found one! I found one!"

Anna turned around and smiled sweetly at the mother as if in understanding of
the child's unexpected excitement. Then, when she looked down at the boy's
hands to see what his great find was, her chin nearly dropped to the floor. In his
hand was the figurine she had just put down!

"Let me see." The mother said as she snatched it neatly from the boy's hand.

Anna closed her mouth and turned sharply back to the items on the opposite
aisle, but continued to listen closely to the pair. Because of her own
embarrassment, she was curious to see how the mother would handle this
delicate situation. She assumed that when the mother realized what the figurine
was actually of, she would try to play off the boy's find as art, or invent some
equally lame explanation. Instead, Anna's eavesdropping was cut short when she
heard the mother say, "Hey, I think you did find one!"

Anna whirled back towards the woman so quickly that she almost lost her
balance. This brought a strange look from both mother and son but Anna didn't
notice, her attention was on the item in the woman's hand. The horrified look of
interest on her face must have been apparent because the mother gripped the
figurine to her chest and quickly herded her son further down the aisle. Before it
was out of view, however, Anna was shocked to see that the figurine no longer
bared any resemblance to a man's privates, but now looked very similar to an
old Army figure.

Anna stood in the aisle, an uncomprehensive grin stuck on her face, trying to
figure out what had just happened. When she had first seen the figurine on the
shelf, it looked like a porcelain model of a skater. Then when she had it in her
hands, she saw that it was a bit more exotic than a skater. Quite a bit more.
Then, when it in the other woman's hands, it looked like a simple toy Army
man. "I must be losing my mind," she said to herself and laughed at her own
confusion.

Fortunately, the urge to shop over came the urge to find sanity about two
seconds later when she spotted a box with some attractive carvings on it sitting
on the shelf beside her. She quickly dismissed the inconsistency of the figurine
incident and went back to browsing.

Anna slowly worked her way down the packed aisles of the shop occasionally
picking up items to examine, but nothing really stood out and appealed to her.
Two aisles over, however, she ran across a cardboard box with a picture of a
gun on the front of it. It reminded her that her brother's birthday was coming up
and, being the procrastinator that she was, she still hadn't gotten him anything.
He had a collection of toy guns just like the one on the box, so she picked it up
thinking that she might as well get the task of finding him a present over with
while she was here.

The label on the box said that it was a Daisy Target Pistol, but when she
opened the box to look at the gun, she knew right away that this was definitely
not a target pistol. Again, she felt blood rushing to her face and she was
reminded of the figurine. Both were similar in shape, but definitely not in size.
This one was much larger! However, the main difference between the two
seemed to be that this particular device apparently worked better if you inserted
two C sized batteries... Which, of course, were not included with the package.

She gently set the box back down, wondering if she had accidentally stumbled
onto one of those "Adult" stores her friends were always talking about. Surely
these items hadn't escaped the owner's attention, had they? Maybe she should
mention it to the cashier at the front of the store, just in case.

With that concern out of mind, Anna went back to browsing the other items
on the shelf in front of her. As she looked, her mind drifted back to her friends
again and how they were always trying to get her to go with them to their
favorite adult stores. They used the excuse that they thought she could use a
few "toys" to hold her over until she found a new boyfriend, but she suspected
that it was only because they wanted someone to go with them. Even though
she was depressed, and probably more than a little grouchy since her breakup
with Michael, she never really understood the philosophy behind their sort of
thinking, the use of toys and gadgets. Surely a person could hold out for a
while, couldn't they? She had to admit though, after three months of no sexual
encounters, she was starting to get a little turned on by all this stuff.

Anna was standing in the aisle, her eyes fixated on the pistol box again, her
brain a million miles away thinking about Michael and how life used to be with
him, back before he had turned into such an ass. Suddenly, she was brought
back to reality by a tap on the shoulder and she turned to face an elderly
gentleman with a worn face and thick, black rimmed glasses. All thoughts of
sex left her head immediately.

"Excuse me," he said in a kindly manner, then motioning towards the box, "are
you going to buy that?"

Anna looked at the box, then stepped away from it trying desperately to hold
back a giggle, "Nope, didn't even see it there."

"Thank you." He said picking it up and examining the label on it. Then he
carefully lifted the lid and peered inside. A huge grin began to spread across his
face and he looked back up at Anna, "It's exactly what I've been looking for!"

Dumbfounded, Anna couldn't help but to stand there, staring at the back of the
man's balding head as he walked away.

"Pervert," she thought to herself, then dismissed it and headed towards the
next aisle.

As Anna wondered down the last aisle, she became aware of the fact that she
had not found anything worth buying yet. She felt a little disappointed, but was
still trying to be optimistic. Maybe it was a case of saving the best for last? It
was right after that thought that she saw the strangest thing.

There was a large box sitting on the floor in front of a shelf that contained
various sizes of stuffed animals. The picture on the box was of a Victorian doll.
She had always liked the old dolls with their colorful dresses and cute hats, so
she picked it up for a closer look. Once it was in her hands she realized that,
again, it was not what she thought it was. The picture on the box was now of a
dark haired man sitting in a very inviting position. The label on the box now
claimed that it contained an anatomically correct blow up Ken doll! Instead of
putting it down right away, she took a closer look at the box. She never realized
just how cute Ken actually was. She remembered playing with her Barbie dolls
as a child, but she didn't remember him looking quite that good.

She heard giggling from behind her, so she set the box with the Ken doll back
on the floor and casually began picking through the stuffed animals on the
shelf. Two young girls moved in beside her and began searching the stuffed
animals with her. Anna looked over at them and smiled, they smiled back at her
so she picked up a hand puppet and started working it's mouth with her hand.
"Hi there," she said. Immediately the expressions on the girls face's changed.
The older looking one took a defensive stance as though she was preparing to
fight while the other just stood there, her grin dropping into a frown and tears
welling up in her eyes. Anna took the puppet off her hand and tossed it back on
the stack, then gave them a half a smirky grin and started working her way
down the aisle away from them.

Anna had only made it a few feet when she sneaked a peek back at the girls
and saw them looking at the box she had set down. She was struck with the
horror of these two innocent kids seeing what was in that box, even if they
were brats. Her heart was telling her that they were just kids, be nice, but her
head was saying "wouldn't it be funny if..."

Deciding to follow her heart, Anna walked back to where the girls were
standing, already counting their money to see if they had enough to buy the doll,
and without a word, snatched up the box and started to walk away with it. She
figured that if she had to protect them, she sure as hell didn't have to be nice
about it. One of the girls instantly called out for her mommy and the other
started crying hysterically.

Anna fully intended to keep walking, but stopped in her tracks when the
mother came around the corner in front of her, probably wondering what the
fuss was about. With her escape route blocked, Anna conceded. She
approached the confused mother and took her aside, quietly explaining the
reason why she was trying to keep the Ken doll away from the girls. Anna
handed the box to mother, fully expecting a look of shock.

Instead, the mother gave her a dirty look and ask why on earth a grown
woman would try to take a Barbie doll away from two little girls, and why on
earth she would make up such a ridiculous excuse for doing so. At that point
the mother, in her fit of rage, turned the front of the box back towards Anna.
There it was, just as plain as could be, a life size (for a child) Barbie doll! Not a
Ken doll, this was an actual Barbie! Anna stood there, her face blood red, and
tried to come up with something to say. She even had her mouth open for a
brief second before snapping it shut again. There were just no words.

The mother looked at her as though she had expected that very response, then
put the box under her arm, grabbed one daughters hand and walked away, the
other girl following behind.

Now Anna was sure she was losing her sanity. There was no doubt in her
mind that the box had changed when it was passed from her hands to the
mother's, but she couldn't understand why... Or how!

Then the words on the sign in the window came back to her and had she not
grabbed the shelf next to her, she would have fallen flat on her face. "A little
something for everyone." That was it! It had to be! She felt it when she walked
in, the magical quality of the shop, but had easily dismissed it. How could she
not? The sheer thought was just ridiculous! But now, with the evidence being
right there in her face, she could no longer deny it. The figurine and the Barbie
doll had both changed right in front of her. And she wasn't for sure because she
didn't actually see it, but she guessed that the gun had probably changed also
(meaning, it was her that was the pervert and not the old guy.) It was all there
and it was as simple as the sign, shoppers picked up what they needed.

Anna started to feel dizzy again, so she walked to the front counter and asked
the young man behind the cash register if she could use the shop's facilities. She
needed to sit down for a minute to regain her senses. The man gave her a look
of total understanding and pointed to the Restroom sign at the back of the shop.
She looked at him suspiciously and wondered just how many times this young
man had pointed out that sign, then she headed for restroom.

Once inside, she looked around to make sure no one else was there, then
plopped down in a big overstuffed chair that was in a small lounge area of the
restroom. She closed her eyes for a moment and waited for the shock to wear
off. Finally, she felt her heart rate slow to a more normal pace and when her
brain started working again, she began thinking about the items she had picked
up. She wanted desperately to be suave and hip and say that it didn't matter, but
was still embarrassed by fact that everything of interest that she picked up was
a sex toy. She laughed at herself and thought of her friends again. As much as
she hated to admit it, maybe they were right, maybe that's exactly what she
needed. Obviously it was, even had this strange store was telling her so.

Then she remembered that everything she had picked up, everything she
supposedly needed, had been bought by someone else. She had been looking at
the last aisle when she found the Ken doll, and now, even that was gone. There
was nothing left for her.

That can't be right, Anna thought to herself. If everyone else had what they
needed, then she should be able to find what she needed. Maybe she had just
overlooked it somewhere along the way. So, with a new determination based on
the knowledge that she would find something, Anna decided she would look
though the shop again, this time paying close attention to what she picked up.
She left the restroom with a sense of resolve.

Anna began browsing the first aisle again, this time picking up several items
just to see if they would magically change in her hands. Nothing did. She turned
at the end of the aisle and started to go down the next when she noticed
something sitting on the front counter where the young man was standing
behind the cash register. It was the  box with the Ken doll! She could very
clearly see the man on the label, so it was obviously no longer trying to disguise
itself.

She walked to the counter and nonchalantly picked up the box. Pretending to
study the label, she asked the young man why the mother with the two little
girls hadn't bought it. The man just looked at her quizzically, then said, "I don't
think this would be an appropriate toy for children." Anna looked up at him a
little surprised, then realized that he was seeing the same box she was. She
couldn't help but laugh. Of course he was seeing the same box, he probably
knew what was in every package that went out of this store.

Anna tried hard to fight back another blush as she pulled her wallet out of her
purse and paid for the box. The man at the cash register put the box in a plastic
bag, looked at it, then added a second bag so that the label wouldn't show
through. He handed the bag to Anna and smiled. "Thank you, please stop in and
see us again real soon." He said. Anna gave him a sarcastic grin, thanked him,
then left the shop.

She brought the package home that evening having no idea what she planned
to do with it. She wanted to play with her new "toy," but felt silly at the thought
of using such a thing. The embarrassing thought that she may actually need it
still weighed heavy on her. It went against everything she was ever taught while
growing up. Young ladies just didn't do that sort of thing.

She decided to think about it more while getting dressed for bed and went
upstairs to change. If nothing else, she could at least be comfortable.

When she came back downstairs, she took the package to the living room with
her and emptied the contents onto the coffee table in front of her couch. There
were pamphlets of different sexual positions, all kinds of different shaped toys
and attachments, some she didn't even recognize. And of course, the doll. After
looking through some of the stuff, she decided to blow up the doll and see what
it looked like. The model they used must have been a very good looking man,
because the blown up doll was very attractive!

Unsure of what she wanted to do next, she leaned him up against the couch
and went to the kitchen to get a glass of wine. This awkward situation would go
over much better if she were drunk.

When she returned to the living room, she nearly screamed! The wine glass
she was holding slipped out of her hand and hit the floor with a crash and a bag
of chips she had intended on eating went flying in the air. Sitting on couch was
a tall dark haired man, a man who looked just like the doll that had previously
been sitting in the very same place this man was now sitting.

He looked up at her and a big goofy smile spread across his gorgeous face. His
eyes sparkled with the innocence of a child and it disarmed her to the point that
she wasn't sure what she should do. Should she run back to the kitchen for a
knife? Or should she try to find out who he was first? She decided on the later,
but was prepared for the former.

"Who are you and what are you doing in my house?" She asked him in a stern
voice.

"What do you mean?" He asked shyly. "You invited me here."

"I did no such thing, I don't even know who you are!"

"I came with the box." He said and handed the box to her to examine.

She took a quick glance at the front of the box, careful not to take her eyes
off of him for very long, "yeah, OK, so you look like the guy on the box, big
deal. How did you get in here?"

"You don't understand, I am the guy on the box! Read the label on the back."

She looked at him suspiciously, then flipped over the box and began reading
the label. At the bottom there was a list that stated the contents of the package.
After mention of all the toys and attachments, the last item on the list simple
read, One Life Size Dummy.
