April 15-19 "Hispanic Ministry in the Third Millennium:
Family Ministry"
Begins Monday at 2 PM & ends Friday at noon. MACC Team; Registration $65 & Tuition $195; Room & Board: $200

This workshop will help pastoral agents in Hispanic ministry to effectively respond to the needs of Hispanic families. This unique history accounts for important differences in cultural values, language preference, and faith expressions among Hispanics. Families who have generational ties to this country have very different social and pastoral needs from recently arrived immigrants. This workshop will help identify the comlplex cultural and generational dynamics within Hispanic families as they preserve their originating culture and integrate new norms and values. Experienced family ministers will help guide participants in developing pastoral plans that respond to the needs of the whole family.

June 10-14 Healing and Empowerment for Hispanic Youth At Risk
Begins Monday at 9 AM & ends Friday at noon. Arturo Chávez; Registration $65 & Tuition $260 (those seeking CEU credit will pay an additional fee); Room & Board: $200

Over a fourth of the Hispanic population is eighteen and younger according to the 2000 Census. In many communities throughout the U.S., the poverty and school drop-out rates among Hispanic children continue to climb, contributing to their involvement in gangs, crime and substance abuse. This is a critical time for both church and society to create a hopeful future for Hispanic youth by building communities of healing and empowerment for them today. This workshop is for anyone working with Hispanic youth and children in a church, school, or neighborhood setting. While it will give an overview of the problems youth face, its primary focus is on developing effective prevention and intervention initiatives that 1) are culturally relevant to Hispanics (primarily Mexican American); 2) draw on the strengths of the community; 3) engage the whole family; and 4) meet both social and spiritual needs. This intensive workshop will utilize panel discussions, dynamic presentations, field trips, and group work. Participants will contribute and receive concrete ideas and tools for building collaborative networks, advocacy coalitions, and community-based strategies for reaching youth. The training will offer continuing education credits for social workers and for professionals in other related fields.
