Faire 2003
This year for faire I decided that I had little time and absolutely no money for a new outfit. I therefore decided to make something new. Go figure. Well, I scrounged through my stash, and after deciding on about four different outfits. I came up with this. I had bought a Christmas tablecloth on clearance, with the idea to make a forepart out of it. I decided that it was too short, and I didn't feel like adding on to the bottom right now, so I cut it up into a doublet.
For some unknown reason, I decided that making handbound eyelet lacing strips was the way to go for the front closure. Frankly, after doing all of the eyelets on my corset I don't know why I decided that. Temporary insanity, it happens to the best of us. So, I grabbed some scraps of duck cloth selvedge ( I love that cloth) and started making eyelets. I am actually quite fast at that now. Forty eyelets later, I had these. I attached them to the duck cloth interlining of the doublet, and then hand stitched the lining along the back. It kind of feels like you are trussed up when you are wearing this, but it makes the most beautifully smooth doublet you could ask for.
Here are the lacings attached the interlining and laced up. The big wrinkle running along the waist is there only because the bottom edge of the doublet was not finished yet. I attached a row of tabs to it to finish it off. Yay, my first tabs. You can start to see how nice and smooth the fit is though. It kind of molds to you.
Here you can see a partial view of the doublet. It has the tabs attached, and it is laced closed. Someday, I will have to make the matching sleeves and shoulder ties for it. Maybe next faire. I used the same camicia from my last years dress mainly because, well, I ran out of time. It looked fairly good anyway. I ended up having to hand whipstitch the two front edges closed when I wore the doublet, because I didn't get a chance to finish the outer layer near the lacing strips.
