Basic Objective To throw the javelin as far as possible using a run-up.
Rules You may start your run-up and throw at any point on the runway, but you must not cross the line.
Basic Technique 1) The Grip
Index-finger grip Your index finger should grip the javelin shaft to the rear of the binding with your thumb along the side of the binding. The javelin should also lie in the center of your palm and then be gripped with your other fingers.
Second-finger grip Your second finger should grip the javelin shaft near the rear of the binding and your index finger should be extended and rested on the javelin. Your thumb should lie along the top of the handle and the javelin should be gripped in the middle of your palm. The rest of your fingers should then grip the javelin comfortably.
V grip Grip the shaft of the javelin in between your index and second fingers. This grip should be to the rear of the binding with your thumb along the binding. Again, the javelin should lie in the palm of your hand and gripped by the rest of your fingers.
2) The Throw Grip the javelin in any one of the three ways mentioned above. Extend your throwing arm back, with the tip of the javelin lined up with your ear. Move first your lower body into the throw, follwed by your torso and chest. Your arm with resemble a whip in that you should pull forward quickly above your shoulder, not to the side.
3) The Run Up There are so many variations of this that I couldn't possibly even begin to tell you all of them or recommend a particular method. Talk to a coach and he or she with show you a technique that works best for you. These instructions are only meant to give you a taste of what javelin throwing is like. For technique, consult a coach
