ACQUIRED IMMUNE DEFICIENCY

There seems to be indications that the government and popular news media may not providing a true picture of the AIDS situation. For the most part, they often seem to be providing very little information at all. Graphs of infection rates or other specific information seem to have virtually disappeared from the scene in the last few years. What little educational material provided always seems to connected AIDS with drug use.
It is generally agreed that properly used condoms can provide over 99 percent protection on any given encounter. However, even at that rate, the probability of failure approaches near certainty if the process is repeated enough times. Depending on the failure rate considered, and frequency of intercourse, the probability of condom failure in regular use might become quite substantial after just a few years.
In Southeast Asia, the AIDS infection rate went from no known cases in over a million cases in about five years. Even if there were as many as a thousand people infected initially, the disease would have to double every six months to reach that level in that time period. The rate of spread has apparently been substantially worse in India. If the spread of the disease were to continue at that same rates, the affected populations could be overwhelmed in another five years or less.
There is a general agreement that AIDS has already become a major disaster in Africa, especially south of the Sahara desert, with entire countries infected at a rate of over 20 percent, and some local areas infected at much higher levels than that. In that continent, it appears to be primarily a heterosexual disease, with approximately equal numbers of males and females infected. Illegal drug use does not appear to be a significant factor there, since most affected populations simply cannot afford
It appears there are areas even within the United States where the disease has apparently become quite prevalent. In one major city, it has been reported that 2 percent of all babies born were infected. Not all babies born to mothers testing positive are infected themselves. At current rates, it may be that over 5 percent of the mothers were infected. At last count, only part of the city was infected, which might mean that a substantially higher percentage of the women of reproductive age were infected in those districts that have been affected so
The new treatments for the disease are said to be much more efficient than the previous ones. However, taking the drugs is both complicated and expensive. It is known that AZT can be toxic when taken over a long period, and a substantial portion of people infected cannot tolerate the drugs . It does not appear to be certain that they will be the answer over the long term. Although the can reduce virus levels to undetectable levels, it
is said the virus rebounds soon after treatment is discontinued.
