| COURSE REQUIREMENTS |
| 1. READING RESPONSES -- 30% of Final Grade On 10 Thursdays during the quarter, students will be assigned a reading response question that engages that week's readings in terms of the author's argument, larger theoretical concerns, how each work relates to other course readings and/ or how what is described compares to similar trends in other geographical areas. Students will be expected to answer 7 out of these 10 possible responses (3/4 to 1 page in length, single-spaced), all due on the following Tuesday. 2. PRESENTATIONS -- 10% of Final Grade One or more students (depending on class size) will lead off each session with a 20-30 minute presentation on the readings for that class. After summarizing key points, they will be expected to raise discussion questions, as well as be active participants/leaders in the subsequent discussion. Students will sign up for one (individual or group, depending on class size) presentation at the beginning of the quarter. 3. ESSAYS -- (Mid-term: 10% of Final Grade; Final Paper: 40%) Students will have two essays to produce. First, a short (4-6 page) mid-term essay on one selected topic, or on a specific racial or ethnic group discussed int he first half of the course. And second, a longer (10-12 page) final paper that further develops the topics addressed in the first paper. These will be discussed further in class. 4. ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION -- (10% of Final Grade) As the class will be conducted in seminar format, the regular attendance and active participation of each student is vital to the success of discussion. Students will be expected to come to class ready to discuss the assigned material. |
