Low Impact Camping
As our lives become more and more hectic, many people are seeking to relax
by enjoying nature, at its finest. By enjoying activities such as camping,
hiking, backpacking and canoeing, people are able to enjoy themselves and also
get to experience the joy of learning about the wildlife around them. But,
as society encroaches further and further into the pristine lands of the wild,
these lands are being destroyed. To help preserve the remaining wildlife
sanctuaries, care needs to given to maintain the remaining lands. Herein,
you will find tips on how make as little of an impact upon the wild while
enjoying it none the less. Also, you will find links to find out more
information about camping, educational activities that are available, and
instructions on how to properly build a safe
campfire.
- Do not collect anything from wildlife sanctuaries. If you aren't in
a wildlife sanctuary, check to make sure that what you are collecting is not
endangered, globally or locally.
- If you do have to take anything with you, pictures are a great way of
remembering your adventures.
- Do not bring pets. They are not a natural part of the ecosystem and
can damage it. If you do have to bring a pet, keep it on a leash.
- If you are bathing in a stream or lake, be sure to use a biodegradable
soap.
- Pick up your trash after yourself.
- Do not leave trash lying around until you are ready to leave. This
invites unwelcome visitors, such as bears and raccoons.
- Keep food in an airtight container, and keep the container put away out of
the reach of wild animals that might be attracted.
- Do not feed the wildlife. This encourages contact between animals
and humans, which is not beneficial to either. It also helps to hasten
the spread of disease.
- When riding mountain bikes, keep on designated bike paths only. The
wheels can tear up vegetation and crush small animals.
- Do not dump chemicals onto the land or into the water.
- Do not leave broken glass or pieces of plastic lying around.
