How to Build a Safe Campfire
One of the greatest experiences associated with camping is the
campfire. Family and friends can gather around the fire sharing ghost
stories or roasting marshmallows. But, it is important to ensure that the
campfire is built correctly for the safety of those gathered, as well as the
safety of the wildlife. Here are some instructions for building a safe
campfire.
Tools Needed
| Matches |
Kindling (Can include paper) |
Wood |
| Large Rocks (about 20) |
Shovel |
Bucket |
- Dig about a shallow pit, to approximately 6 inches deep in the deepest
part. Fill the bucket with some of the dirt.
- Place the large rocks in a ring formation around the pit. This is to
create a fire barrier.
- Place your kindling in a cone shape in the center of the pit.
Include kindling of varying sizes to ensure there is enough fuel for the
fire.
- Light the fire. Let the kindling ignite for a few minutes
- When the fire is going strong, add the wood according to the desired size
of the fire.
- Sit back and enjoy the campfire. Check periodically to make sure
that the fire hasn't spread outside of the fire barrier.
- When you are ready to douse the fire, throw the dirt from the bucket onto
the fire.
* Note: the kindling should include twigs or paper that were collected
from your home; you should not gather twigs from your campsite, as these are a
necessary part of the ecosystem.
