PRICE
- check out the the best deals and the most appealing packages available in the market.  You should also know your budget because it is your budget that will determine whether you have to settle for a brand new or a second-hand desktop.

SYSTEM TYPE
- Look at your desk and determine how much space you have, remember you'll have to fit the computer on or under it somehow.

PROCESSOR TYPE or the CPU
- the type of processor in the computer helps to determine the speed of the desktop, and how wel it handles graphics and tasking.  Choose the one that suits your needs.

PROCESSOR SPEED
- speed is measured in MHz and the usual speed range is between 300MHz up to the latest speed of 2000MHz.  In general, the higher this number gets, the faster the processor will run.  While this number is agood reference for gauging how fast the computer operates.  it is important to note that with different processors, a computer with the same processor speed will actually run at different rates.

INSTALLED RAM
- Random Access Memory (RAM) is what stores the most current data, applications in use, and operating system so that the computer can quickly access that information.  The more RAM the computer has, the easier and quicker it will be to operatie in many programs at the same time.  Usual RAM range is between 32MB and 1Gb and most computers have expandable memory, meaning more can be added as needed.

HARD DRIVE CAPACITY
- the hard drive is where permanent date is stored - applications, documents, all your permanent information.  The usual hard drive range is between 3.2GB to over 80GB.  Not only do you avoid having to keep all your information on a floppy disk, but you can store large amounts of information right in the computer itself and access it very quickly.

OPERATING SYSTEM
- from the moment you start up your machine, the operating system is activated.  It is the program managing all other programs on the computer.  The big distinction in operating systems is between those for Macs and those for PC's.  Mac's all run on the same operating system, the only difference is in which version is used.

PERIPHERALS INCLUDED
- there are few different components that can be included with a desktop system.  For example, a desktop computer does not automatically include a monitor.  Neither is it guaranteed that speakers will be included.  on the other hand, some manufacturers like to throw in a printer or a scanner to sweeten the deal.  if any of these components are important to you, check to see if they are included with the desktop.

DRIVES
- a drive is a place for storing information, and there are three different kinds that can come with a desktop.  types of drives include: 3.5MB (1.44 MB) Floppy Disk Drive, Zip Disk Drive, CD-ROM Drive, DVD-ROM Drive, etc.
