SAN JUAN
PUERTO RICO
We walked off the boat and made our way throughthe picturesque streets of old San Juan.
Cruise ships
docked at San
Juan
El Convento. An old convent, converted to hotel. It is worth venturing inside and taking a look at the courtyard, which now houses a restaurant.
The Fountain.
A walking tour of San Juan is probably the best way to see this old colonial city, which I think is the most romantic place in the caribbean islands. The boats dock pretty much directly down town and representatives of the tourist board were readily available at the dock to hand out city guides and maps.We walked off the boat and made our way through the old city to the fort. It took about 15 to 20 min of leisurely walking. We passed El Convento and the Cathedral and then made our way down the hill, around Museo del Nino, to the fort walkway.
The map we received from the tourism representative helped, but even the rough map from the cruise ship would have got us there. It seems like all roads going west end at the fort. We were at the El Morro fort in no time. The admission is $3 pp and children are free, so the visit is well worth it.
Hard to believe that they had to lower the canons down this steep stairway using only pulleys, since horses were forbidden from the fort in order to keep drinking water supply clean.
