Icebreaker's frenetic energy, searing virtuosity on a range of instruments and dynamic stage presence have all contributed to a musical image that cuts across established categories. Formed in 1989 by a group of University of York music students, Icebreaker made their London debut the same year. Since then, they have taken their eclectic mix of music throughout Britain, Europe and the US, and released several CDs . The group has worked with the Royal Ballet and in June this year appeared at Sadler's Wells and on tour with Random Dance Company performing Michael Gordon's complex rhythmic piece Trance that forms the second half of this concert.

Pierrot Lunaire

The New Music Players was founded by the composer Edward Dudley Hughes and is one of the most engaging of the new independent contemporary classical ensembles. It has made several commercial CDs, worked with leading composers, broadcast many times on BBC Radio 3, appeared at major UK Festivals and toured in Europe.
Profoundly moving, Pierrot Lunaire is a seminal work full of imagery and drama, a tour de force blending the comic and poetic. Pierrot is framed by Ravel's evocative settings of de Parny Madagascan poems and Edward Dudley Hughes delicate score to Joris Ivens's 1929 film classic Regen (Rain) (1929).
