| I too have been bitten by the V6 bug!!, after 6 months of owning an 820, I decided to let her go :( I managed to get 400 for her, which considering the current state of the used 800 market, was a very good price. I picked up a 1989 MK1 827 Si Auto Fastback, complete with 8 months MOT, and 126K on the clock, for the totally reasonable sum of 175!!!. The 820 was sold to a friend of James Copp-Taylor, who has binned his BMW 525e for it!! Result!! I quote: "The 820 seems to be so much more together than the BMW" The car isnt without it's fair share of gremlins, as it has been the victim of serious neglect over the years. The oil was changed on New Years Eve, and I was totally shocked!! I have seen cleaner looking oil drain out of diesel engines! but strangely, the tappets didnt rattle! the gearbox was filled with Dexron II ATF, which was deep brown in colour, resulting in a very snatchy gearchange. The air filter was black with oil, and the ignition leads are breaking down.....it looks like a Pink Floyd Concert Under the Bonnet at night!! And to top it off, there was a very severe coolant leak, caused by corrosion of a metal pipe, which was accelerated by the lack of antifreeze in the system. The metal pipe lives in the V of the engine, under the induction chamber, so you can imagine how long it took to fix......7 Hours!! James Copp-Taylor had a go at fixing it, but it let go again the following day, prompting me to get soaking wet, and very cold for 7 hours, fixing it. But now it is nearly 90% sorted, it is not a bad motor. One or 2 things left to do still, but it is taking shape! Continue> |
