More 827 Stuff....
Well, it has been 6 months since this was updated, and an eventful 6 months it has been! One of the notable things about the 827, was the lower than normal oil pressure reading on the guage. I was assured that these things are not at all accurate, and not to worry. I thought that the sump pickup may be sludged up, so proceeded to remove the front member, frontpipe (Easier said than done!), and the sump. The Pickup strainer was fine, but alas, I found 3 little shards of grey/gold coloured metal in the bottom of the sump, and my worst fears were confirmed: Bearing shells. That explains the oil pressure.

I rang the Local Rover dealer, and got quoted 8.36 + VAT each, and I need 12 of them!. I then rang a local engine specialist, who quoted me 35inc. for a set of big ends. So it looks like a project to be done in the near future.

In the meantime, I have flushed the engine with a double dose of flush (a bit naughty), changed the filter, and I am now running a 10w40 semi-synthetic oil. 1500 miles later, it appears to be working better than Mineral. I have slightly better pressure at Idle when warm, and as yet, the oil is not a filthy black colour, as was the case with the 2 lots of Mineral I had installed before. The gearbox has also had the requisite 2 drops and refills of Dexron 3 (The next best thing to Hondamatic), and appears to be behaving itself.

Will let you know how the Big end job progresses!!
