Day 2

Previous Day Calendar Next Day

Edwardsville, IL to Sullivan, MO

We did not travel as many miles today. However, we spent more time at a few places. Our first stop today was at the Mustang Corral-a place that sells Mustang parts, old and new. They had a Mustang junkyard in the back that they let us walk through and take pictures. Jerry got a t-shirt there.

We went on to find the Chain of Rocks Bridge. It is no longer open for vehicle traffic, but you can walk it over the Mississippi River. When we got there it was closed (only open Saturday and Sundays). It was grown over and there was a gate over the road. We walked around the gate and walked up to where we could see the bridge and took pictures (of course).

We crossed the River into Missouri on I-270 (parallel to the old Chain of Rocks Bridge) and followed Riverside Drive into St. Louis.

At the Gateway Arch, we parked right next to the Mississippi River! We went to the top of the Arch and took a lot of photos. BJ used her cell phone to call her parents and left a message on their machine that we were calling from the top of the Arch.

Leaving St. Louis, we stopped at Ted Drewes Frozen Custard. BJ had the Strawberry Shortcake and Jerry has the Tiramisu Sundae.

We stopped at Route 66 State Park, which used to be the site of Times Beach, a town that was evacuated and leveled in the 70’s due to dioxin poisoning.
