We drove the expressway to Dixie Truckers Home in McLean and stopped for lunch. We were starting our Route 66 trip from there (we had done Dixie to Joliet during a previous trip, which is what gave us the idea for this one).

Our first town after that was Atlanta, which had a cool 8-sided library building. From there, we found the Pig Hip Restaurant (now closed) in Broadwell.

We stop at some over grown sections of the road near Sherman, where we pulled off to take pictures.

Entering Springfield, we went to Shea’s-a service station turned into a museum of Route 66 and service station memorabilia. The owner, Bill Shea, told us stories of his life owning a service station on Route 66.

In Springfield, we visited the Old Capital Building. We weren’t expecting much, but were surprised at what it was.

We then went to Cozy Dog to try the corn dogs we heard so much about. A man came up to us and asked if we were the newly-weds (we had “Just Married - Route 66” painted on the back window). He is Bob Waldmire, an artist who draws Route 66 postcards. He gave us a postcard and shared some stories about Cozy Dog and Route 66.

In Litchfield, we went to the Ariston. We met the owner, Nick Adams, and took are picture under his famous sign. We ordered strawberry cheesecake-which he wouldn’t let us pay for! We promised to mail him a picture for his customer photo album.
