WHAT IS A HERO??

Here's an extract of an article I found on USA Today.

Don't call jocks sports 'heroes'

By George J. Bryjak

USA Today

Designating athletes as heroic because of the strength, speed and physical agility they exhibit as competitors makes about as much sense as confirming that lofty status on racehorses or acrobatic dolphins at Sea World.

Athletic participation at the elite level is an egoistic, self-centered activity, as athletes must continually hone their bodies to play to the limits of their abilities. While athletes are routinely injured, their impairments are suffered in the pursuit of fame, fortune and championships. By contrast, heroism is altruistic behavior performed from a strong sense of love, duty and commitment, and often entails placing oneself in life-threatening situations.
