| SOURCES AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: I want to especially thank Nancy J. Skinner White, for all of her valuable Noel information. I had been searching for the parents of Stella Noel for quite some time, with no luck, when my Uncle Laverne Roudebush showed me Adel Cemetery. He knew these Noels were related, but had no idea how. I posted some letters and Nancy answered right away. She shared with me all of the information that she has on the family, and I deeply appreciate it. She is in the process of compiling a book about her ancestors in the Civil War and their families. Nancy says Wayne Long, who's wife is a Noel descendent, has been very helpful to her in sharing his information, also. Thank you also to Norma Herman for the background on Adel Cemetery, and additional information and clarifications. NOEL HISTORY TRACES OF THE PAST Many thanks to Uncle Laverne & Aunt Ardath for showing me the family gravesites in Greene & Owen Counties on such a hot, July afternoon. Also to my parents, daughters, grandson, and friend, Vince, for traveling with me, packed together in a crowded mini van, away from restrooms, and Coke machines.. Just remember that many future generations will appreciate the time and effort it took to take these photos, and the info we discovered was priceless. We should have family outtings more often :-)..... Ramona. |

| The land for the Adel Cemetery was donated by Levi Medlock Carpenter and his wife Mary (Ooley) Carpenter. (sister to the below Nancy Ooley Carpenter). On October 11, 1852, the present Christian Church at Adel, received a deed to its present grounds, on the bank of the Big Raccoon Creek. A log structure was erected, this structure served for over 40 years. Described as: Christopher Ooley and Mary A (Carpenter) Ooley, (d/o Joseph and Nancy (Ooley) Carpenter) his wife Donate to the Trustees of The Christian Church NE NE Section 25, Twp 9N, Range 4W, Warranty Deed, book 12, pg 358. The document reads in part: "This indenture witnesseth, that Christopher and Mary Ann (Carpenter) Ooley, his wife, of Owen County, Indiana, for and in consideration of the natural love and affection we have for the Christian Church, we do give, grant, bargain and convey to the Trustees to wit: Levi Carpenter, William J Fisher and John H Ooley, trustees of said house and their successors in office, a parcel of land .....to have and to hold for the same for the use of the Christian Church...." The Church was also called Troy or Raccoon, and early Church records list many Ooley's, and allied families, as members. The cemetery was first called "Troy" later changed to Adel. The first person buried in this cemetery was Patsy Ooley. |
