| On June 5, 1990 in an atmosphere of door-opening to democracy and human relations, Rotary officially entered the former U.S.S.R. for the first time with the Charter of the Rotary Club "Moscow", whose cretion was due to the efforts and good-will of Rotary International, to the development of freedom and democracy inside the country, alongside with the appearance of a new class of financially and politically independently minded professional people who truly believed that «he profits most who serves best». | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Among the first goals of the Moscow Rotary Club Charter members was to concentrate humanitarian efforts of people representing different professions, nationalities and religions, as well as draw numerous foreign clubs to fulfilment of humanitarian and charity programmes in our capital. Since then more and more supporters of Rotary ideas have joined in forming new clubs throughout the territory of Russia. Today, there are more than 50 clubs carrying out their projects on the territory between Petersburg and Magadan. The work of Rotary Club of Moscow is organized according to the governing rules compulsory for all Rotary clubs. Our Club holds regular meetings once a week, same day, same time and place. In order to give members a broader appreciation of current events and developments in social, economic, political, and scientific fields the club invites speakers featuring interesting talks on the above issues in the context of Rotary objects. Representatives of different international companies and organizations, politicians and diplomats, scientists and clergy have been frequent guests of the club. It is not a custom in Rotary to discuss acute political problems at the meetings because it may hurt relations between the members whose political views are certainly different. Broad mindedness and tolerance are necessary qualities of a Rotarian. The club atmosphere is the cornerstone for promotion of partnership and friendship, concentration on development and realization of club`s charity programmes. Besides, the fact that a club is represented by people of different professions helps the members to break through the narrow limits of professional relations at a working place. Since the very begining the Rotary Club of Moscow decided on the priority of helping youth. Dozens of young Russians have got ant opportunity of studying in foreign universities for the periods of two months or an academic year. Several young medical doctors have been practising in American hospitals. An important part of the club`s work is to help those who are in need. For years the club has been supporting the old people`s home of veterans of stage named after Yablochkova and several orphanages and schools. The Club patronized the Loktev`s choir and dancing ansable, the women`s centre got a grant from French Rotarians. Within the Polio Plus programme the Moscow Club helped the laboratory in Moscow University with the update equipment necessary for monitoring cases of wild polio virus. Rotarians have been donating time and money to help the nation to irradicate poliomyelitis by the year 2000. |
