It Rained on the Desert Today
The rain starts slowly,
with giant water drops
raising small clouds of dust
in the yard.

Then Mother Earth sighs
with a huge gust of wind,
and the bottom falls out
of the clouds!

The rain has finally arrived!

It Rained on the Desert Today, by Ken and Debby, was published by Northland Press in April 1994, and is illustrated by Libba Tracy. Another Reading Rainbow Book (1995-96 season) and winner of the Southwest Book Award for 1994 from the Border Regional Library Association in the Pecos-Texas/NM area, it is already in its second printing.  It was also featured in the National Wildlife Federation's magazine for children, "Your Big Backyard" in April, 1997. (Hardcover $14.95 / Softcover $7.95)

In It Rained on the Desert Today the members of a desert village celebrate the first rainstorm of the summer monsoons after an "endless march of scorching days." The story details how the desert springs to life after the precious rains have passed.
