In some instances, I will recommend that you attend one or more SeniorNet PC classes. These classes can provide the foundation for learning the many advanced capabilities of your PC.
The answers to your questions should enable you to make productive use of your PC and to enjoy the process.
As in most things, practice makes perfect. The best way to retain things is to use them on a regular basis.
