| Boatbuilding Then and Now Boat building has changed a lot over the years. It dates back as far as ancient Rome! There are many important characters in the history of boatbuilding. One of which, Nathaniel Herreshoff worked in his family's business. As a child Nat was always sick and he was small and feeble. As he grew up, his brothers became blind and Nat had to guide them through their work. As Nat grew up, his brothers depended on him more and more. Nat invented a type of steam engine that was used right up until gasoline engines. The way that Nat learned how to build boats was to watch his brothers work. He was amazed at how well his brothers could work. Nathaniel Herreshoff was a brilliant man and made a great impact on the art of boat building that changed it forever. The art of boat building is very tricky. Many people give up on building their own boats because they either have the wrong plans or none at all. You have to know the exact boat you want to build and have the skill to build it. Most beginner boat builders finish their boats in about a year. People like Nathaniel didn't give up even though they probably felt like they wanted to. That is why they were so succsessful. Boat building has changed a lot over the years, but the basic main concept has stayed the same: Make it float! |

| I built this website as an independent project for my fifth grade class. Over my April vacation in 2003 I visited Pease boat works in Chatham, Massachusetts, which is way out on Cape Cod. Then we visited the Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol, Rhode Island and Vanguard sailboats, in Portsmouth, RI. Before I could visit and photograph these people I had to write (or e-mail) them and ask for an appointment to see them. They wrote back to me and told me very nicely that I could come. In fact Mr. Pease told me that he would be honored to see me. You may notice that I have used both color and black and white photos.I did that to make the traditional wooden boats look older with the black and white film and the fiberglass boats look new with the color film. I used my Nikon 35mm. camera to take the photos and I got them developed on a CD. |
