| After we left Chatham, we drove to Bristol, RI, home of the Herreshoff Marine Museum. Here are the things that I found out: Herreshoff boats are very fast. They are known for their lightweight hulls. Their weight allows for a lot of lead ballast (weight of the keel) which allows for a taller mast and more sail area, knowing that the boat won't capsize easily. A major problem for wooden boats was twisting and deforming of the hull planks.(skin) To resolve his problem, Nat Herreshoff used crossed metal straps to keep the wooden planks in place. Some of Nat's sisters and brothers were blind, including John, Nat's business partner. Nat usually came up with the designs of the boats and John was the businessman. Without their partner the other one would probably be useless. Nat was John's eyes when John was around the house and the shop. There was a company over in Ireland called Fife and Watson they were one of the first companies to use the test tank and science to build their boats. Herreshoff still designed his boats by hand. One year Herreshoff built a boat, the Reliance, to defend the America's Cup against Shamrock III, built by the firm of Fife and Watson and sailed by sir Thomas Lipton. Fife and Watson was the first boatbuilder to use the science of tank testing the hull. Herreshoff used the old-fashioned method of carving a model to design the hulls of his boats. He carved the model of Reliance in two nights. Herreshoff defeated science and stayed in the history of boatbuilding forever. |

| This is the inside of a Herreshoff yacht, the Torch. Notice that the ribs are small and lightweight so they do not add much weight to the hull. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
