There has been a great deal of sickness in the Village since Christmas, and death has come very close to us, taking away several of our neighbours, without much warning. John Jeffries and his wife, Edwin Hutton, George H. Young, William Hawkins, Charles Read, and Mrs Honeybone, all gone within a month, and others are still very ill. Old age, heart failure, bronchitis, influenza, and pneumonia, are greatly the causes of this mortality. Each of these cases brought its sorrow, but perhaps the saddest of all was that of William Hawkins, a comparatively young man, who leaves a widow and six children, of whom three are quite young. His end was very quick, taken ill on the Saturday, though he had every attention, pneumonia set in and he died on the following Friday evening. He was a good husband and father, hard working and honest, one who was seldom known to lose his temper, and who, though keeping a public house, had been a total abstainer for several years past. Thus he leaves behind him in many ways the example of a good life, and we sympathise much with his sorrowful family, which he has left to struggle on in this world. R.I.P.
