Since Sept. 1, county health officials have recorded 10 cases of the mosquito-borne illness, the last reported Oct. 8. With the cooler weather and fewer samples of infected mosquitoes this month, officials say the risk of infection is waning this year. The districts also are responsible for minimizing the mosquito populations so residents are not infected with St. Louis and western equine encephalitis, but they haven't seen cases of those illnesses for years, Davis said. A radiographer has been admitted to Durban's St Augustine's Hospital after displaying symptoms e bola virus similar to those of the recently identified arena virus, a news report said.

The person may need to be isolated while lesions are oozing to prevent infection of others -- especially pregnant women. If the virus affects the nerves that control movement (the motor nerves), you may have temporary or permanent weakness or paralysis. Sometimes, the pain in the area where the shingles occurred may last from months to years. This pain, called post-herpetic neuralgia, can be extremely severe. The elderly are at higher risk for this complication.
