Wherein I Rant About how Miaka Does Not, Indeed, Suck
Miaka Yuuki is widely considered the most annoying female character in existance. I think that`s bullcrap. These are the reason why Miaka is hated and my rubutal`s to them.1. She`s Weak and Helpless
I disagree. Notice that everytime Miaka needs to defend herself, she tries, and almost always does a decent job. When they first enter the book, and Yui is taken by the slavers, Miaka defends her. She makes a valiant effort against the second set of slavers later in the epsiode. She attempts to stand up against the tiger in the woods, and, although she fails miserably, she tries. She eventually nearly obliterates Soi with Hotohori`s seiken. Miaka may not be a warrior woman, but she is NOT a weak, helpless pushover.
2. She`s a Pig
Well, isn`t this a nice little cultural stereotype we place on our heroine. It`s in our Western ideal to be ladylike and a little at a time, and mostly light, healthy meals such as salads and fruits. And we call women liberated. Miaka is hated because she eats a lot and keeps her figure? Jealous, anyone? There is absolutely nothing wrong with a woman who eats a lot, espeically if she can keep her figure! Miaka weighs so little, that in real life, she`d be hospitalized! We are hypocritical for one moment hating Miaka for being "weak", then, the next, for not being a perfect lady.
3. She Relies to Much on Tamahome
Have you SEEN Tamahome fight?! Why WOULDN`T you call on him to come rescue you if you were in trouble? Honestly, there is no reasonable 15 year old girl from this world who could kill a tiger in the woods with nothing but a short stick. Tamahome is a formidible warrior. And Miaka KNOWS he will come to protect her when she needs him. I don`t blame her for calling on him.
4. She Dotes on Tamahome
She is in love with him. What else can I say? I, personally, having been in love, know what it`s like. You always want to be around him. You can`t think about anything but him. You`d give your life for him. Miaka loves him, and it`s a decently new love. Miaka really can`t be blamed for obsessing over and always wanting to be with Tamahome.
5. Yui Fans Have it Out For Her
Yui hates Miaka for the majority of the show. Thus, Yui FANS hate Miaka. Unfair. And notice that Yui IS Miaka`s best friend. She did do all this because she was jealous of Tamahome`s relationship with Miaka more than Miaka`s relationship with Tamahome. She hated the thought of killing Miaka. AND Yui gave Miaka her last wish, even though she knew she would be devoured. Finally, Miaka saves Yui from death. A diehard Yui fan should really love Miaka, not hate her.
6. She`s Stupid
No. Miaka is not stupid. She is hilariously socially inept, clumsy, and is sometimes somewhere lacking in common sense, but NOT stupid. In fact, when you examine her train of thought, Miaka is actually quite intelligent:
She figured out:
(1) that Yui was probably Seiryuu No Miko,
(2) that hers and Yui's uniforms connected them,
(3) to tell people Tamahome was a trafficer to get him to help her,
(4) how she could fight the street thugs,
(5) to tell Hotohori you can't change people's minds with orders (which eventually hits home with Hotohori),
(6) that to get rid of the evil Miaka she must kill herself as the evil form is the hidden part of her own self.
(7) to think carefully about other people's lives in danger because of her, and instead risks her life instead of theirs,
(8) When the bats attack her (when they find last seishi 'Chiriko',) she reasons that she must run away from the house so the bats don't attack the others.
(9) "Nakago" was really Chichiri is disguise with little evidence
(10) That Evil Tamahome wasn`t really fixed because he couldn`t know who Tasuki was if he were the real Tamahome
(11) How to use Hotohori`s Seiken
Miaka may do some pretty stupid things, but none of us is perfect and we all do idiotic things from time to time, Miaka as a shojou anime heroine, more than us. But she is not an idiot.
7. Even Male in the Series Falls in Love With Her
This is a biggie, and even I screamed in frusteration when Nuriko told Tamahome that s/he was partly in love with Miaka. Why? Why every single one?!! However, having since gotten over that, I have a few ideas why it might be so.
(A) Miaka is the heroine. It makes good TV to have Tamahome, Hotohori, Nuriko, Taskui, and Amiboshi all in love with her. Especially since she has already obviously chosen Tamahome, so you can get some cool relationships in.
(B) One of Suzaku`s dominions is love. This could influence that fact that all male Seishi fall in love with his Miko. There are two ways to look at this, that the Suzaku seishi, who have the power of Suzaku, are espeically prone to love for a convenient female (which kind of leaves Amiboshi out in the cold), or that as the Miko, Miaka pulls the admiration of men to her.
Miaka is not a character who deserves to be hated as deeply as she is. She`s a shoujo heroine, so, yes, she`s naturally going to be a bit whiney, needy, and even annoying. It comes with the territory.
