New Orleans
January 2005
Our 25th anniversary was New Years 2005. Since we had not done anything special to celebrate, we decided that we would drive to New Orleans enroute to our annual stay in Florida.

Myself and Ron enjoying ourselves at the Phoenix Bar
We ended up staying for 5 days in a small gay-owned 3 roomed cottage, right in the Old French Quarter. The cottage was right across from one of the most active gay bars in the city called The Phoenix. It was open 24/7 and proved to be a very interesting leather bar, with lots of "action" upstairs for those who were interested. This is not our thing, however we did enjoy the friendly atmosphere in the main floor bar on several occasions. (It may be of interest that Hurricane Katrina struck 7 months after our visit resulting in both flooding and a lot of structual damage to both our cottage and The Phoenix Bar. However both recovered.)
We walked quite a few times to Bourbon Street where all the well known jazz bars and clubs that New Orleans is famous for, are located. (Including about 5 active gay bars) It is in this area that the famed Mardis Gras festivities are held, however we were too early for those  celebrations.
We were quick to realize our age was catching up on us as we found that the night time festivites on Bourbon St were a little wild and far too noisey for these 'Two Old Queens'. However we did enjoy the wonderful New Orleans architecture and atmosphere by day including a few of the gay bars. One of the bars had a sign on the door that I have never seen before. It read; "This is a Gay establishment. If you cannot be civil and and behave yourself,, please do not enter!" Interesting - and apparently effective!  Here are a few photos from our New Orleans visit.
