JULY TO AUGUST
2001
The summer of 2001 proved to be a mixture of both joy and sorrow. It was definitely the hottest and most humid summer we have had for several decades. I don't think Ron and I have ever used our barbecue as much as we did during July and August. We almost lived on our deck, with temperatures in the high 80s to mid 90s, and with humidity so high the humidex was often well over 100 degrees. We even had a fan operating outside to be more comfortable. Of course, inside the house, the central air conditioner would be going full blast 24 hours a day keeping the temperature low and the electric bills high.
THE ANNUAL RAINBOW PICNIC
15 July 2001
Ron and I attended the annual family picnic held by and for The  Rainbow Services Org. of Peterborough. A great time was had by all. We were not up to the baseball game ourselves, but it was a lot of laughs watching the Lesbians and Gays trying to 'out-butch' each other.

The day after the picnic, Ron received a call that his Uncle Larry had passed away.  Larry lived a good life and was over 92 yrs old, so his passing was not a shock. However it saddened Ron because it meant the end of that generation of his family. Larry was also the last one of the group of seniors who Ron and I used to have over for Christmas dinner several years ago. It was like the end of an era! The  next week was taken up with visits to the funeral home, the actual funeral and the burial  of the ashes in Brighton (Ron's birthplace) some 10 days later.
However, on the brighter side, Uncle Larry's will, left Ron a modest but much appreciated inheritance. It wasn't enough for us to move to Florida or anything, but it was enough to allow us to have the roof of our house re-shingled and new eavetroughs etc installed. It was a job that needed urgent attention as we didn't think the old shingles would last through another winter. We hired the contractors almost immediately and had the work completed by the end of August. Trying to ensure the contractors did their job satisfactorly  resulted in 2 weeks of severe stress for both Ron and I. Of course the workers were under even more stress, as they became more and more convinced that  these '2 Fussy-Assed Old Queens' would never be satisfied.
However, in the end, our place looks like a brand new house so needless to say we are pleased as hell.
