| Over the past approximately 2 years, I have been corresponding with Gordon Hensley, a Professor of Arts and Theater at The Appalachion State University in Boone, North Carolina. He was in the process of writing a stage play about 'coming out' experiences of actual gay men and lesbians. He had read my web page about my life and asked permission to use it to form part of his play. I said yes but really thought I would hear no more about it. However in the spring of 2006, I heard from him that he had finished writing the play, and they were in rehersal for the play to go on stage in May 2006.The name of the play was "Closets Are For Clothes'. He sent me a copy of the script and I was so touched and thrilled after reading it, that I said to Ron that we just had to go down to see it. So we drove down (about 850 miles) to see the actual production. It was an absolutely wonderful play and I was really surprised at the emotional effect it had on me to see segments of my life re-enacted on stage. The actors were all theater students from the University (mostly straight), and, believe me, they did a fantastic job. I was specially touched by Scott, the actor who played me. They had changed my name to 'James' but had other actors playing my ex wife (Shawn), my sister , my kids and of course Ron.. It was a very humbling experience, and well worth the long trip down. |
