"Conal had relatively few problems, concidering he was born at 2lbs 2ozs.  My feelings once we had begun Kangarooing were overwhelming.  I felt all his little movements against my skin, and it was like he was back inside my womb again." Sherilyn

"Caleb was off the vent for two hours, long enough for each of us to hold him.  Unfortunately we didn't get to hold him again until 4 1/2 weeks later.  As soon as we were able to we started Kangaroo Care again.  Those precious moments of bonding were so special and are forever embedded in my mind." Sheri

"My first daughter, Kaia Michele, was born at 24 weeks weighing 1lb 12ozs.  When they laid her on my bare chest, I was so terrified I couldn't breath.  I was sure the alarms would sound.  I held my breath, waiting.  No alarms!  I started to cry.  My baby had just made me feel like a mom for the very first time." "Sean was a 25 weeker, born February 12, 1998.  He weighed just 1#6ozs at birth.  Due to his delicate condition, Sean was 3 weeks old before I was able to hold him.  This photo was taken on March 6th, 1998.  This was the first time I got to do Kangaroo Care, and only the second time I held him." "It was heavenly.  I had had a rotten day previous to my first Kangarooing when my primary suggested it.  I sat there with a smile that just wouldn't go away.  I could not stop smiling.  It was the greatest feeling!  I was floating above all the NICU stresses and flying high!"  Sandy

"I didn't hear about Kangaroo Care until Daniel was several weeks old.  Once we tried it we were both hooked.  I went from being able to hold him about 5 minutes (as shown) to 15 minutes, then 30, then an hour until I could finally just sit and hold him for hours and hours.  He would nestle up against me and I felt like his mom.  I felt I could finally nurture him instead of being just a visitor.  I recommend Kangaroo Care to everyone!"  Jen

Our son was born at 30 weeks, 3 lbs, 1oz.  Given that he didn't need any oxygen or ventilators, I was able to hold him the day he was born.  It wasn't till four days later that I learned about Kangaroo Care.  I was scared at first, but the fear turned to utter excitement when I felt his little body against mine.  It took my breath away.  The days that followed all I thought about was wanting him home.  Kangarooing him every day and being so happy to hold him inspired my husband to try it.  It was an instant bond.  Seeing him holding our son was the best day of my life.  - Stephanie

My daughter, Katherine, was born at 24 weeks on November 22, 2003 (1lb 9ozs) but by the next day had lost 8ozs and was in a lot of trouble.  It was 26 days, 2 surgeries, many infections, and several siezures later before I got to Kangaroo for the first time.  She was 1lb 51/2 ozs at that point.  Undoubtedly, that was just what she and I needed.  She started fighting a staph infection and then I started Kangarooing every day.  She really began improving.  She started trying to suck and went to bottle supplementing her feeding tube two weeks ahead of when Drs thought she would.  I am so grateful that my baby's nurses were so adamant about Kangaroo Care.  Kat is doing very well and progressing quickly.  - Bonnie
