... WEEKEND ...
Another year, a year older! On Saturday, in accordance to the vibes of time, I joined the land of the older. I now possess a year that I did not possess before. Soon I fear I shall be requiring two cakes to contain all the candles that will be necessary. But I don't mind at all, I don't mind! Unlike some people who will remain unnamed I don't mind having another digit added to my age! For those of us who are slow (and those who forgot!!!) I woke up on Saturday another year older.

Friday night was spent recharging batteries expended on Thursday night that resulted in my falling asleep on Friday morning rather than Thursday night.

On that data I was also informed by The Matriarch that she was entertaining and I was to be present all afternoon. Spirited attempts to weasel out of it were skilfully and completely shot down and so come Saturday I smiled very hard at the entire contingent of my maternal uncles, aunts and cousins as well as one of my paternal uncles who clearly has a keen sense of timing as he appeared just when the meal was being placed at the table! And what a meal it was!! Chicken, beef, fried potatoes, salad, rice and chapatis were dealt with ruthlessly!

I then proceeded to discover that my friends were at a wedding of some sort somewhere and since each one thought the other would tell me no one ended up being told at all!! Spent an indignant and protestful (Is that English? No? Well who cares?!)and rebellious evening at a very large table in Nandos eating a very large ice cream surrounded by nothing but empty chairs.

Also got myself quite a few cards (many of which attributed me years that I have yet to live and a number which erred on the side of caution with regards to exactly how old I am, but it's all good!) One was hidden by an enterprising lady in the mess I carry around with me pretending to be a folder and had she not called me the following day to tell me it was there archaeologists digging in the Nairobi area 1000 years from today would have been the ones to find it! (Muchos Gracias R!!)

The gift department however has not been promising. Despite subtle hints towards a nice VW Polo with leather interior and a CD changer or a P IV notebook all I seem to have got is a fascinating array of ties, sweaters, assorted sweets and chocolates. Someone sent me a yo-yo that I fear will become someone else's present for I have no use for a yo-yo at this point in time! Of course I don't mind the chocolates (they are a memory) or anything at all but some of those ties even corpses would refuse with spirit to wear. As for the cookbooks! How many possible ways are there to cook a chicken? The next cookbook I get I shall rip out the pages, make paper jets, throw them in the air and run after them with a lighter!!

Sunday was spent receiving, opening and deciding which gifts will be kept and which will be given away as Christmas presents to relatives and acquaintances. I believe I have mastered this to a fine art. Also received a call or two that cheered me up immensely!

... SLEEPLESS IN NAIROBI ...

The sands of time...

Indeed I love my brothers and entertain nothing but the most tender feelings of affection for those boys but there are some times when these relations will be strained to the max. That very same Saturday, unbeknownst to all of us the Matriarch decided that we were all spending the night in the same house. This was remarked casually within my earshot and naturally my voice rose in spirited indignation that was just as spiritedly shot down.

The mathematics were very simple -- myself and my immediate relatives (three brothers) were to pair up and occupy the lower and upper decks of a double decker. This decision was met with protest but we all know that a mother's mind once made up remains that way. Seeing as I could do nothing to change the arrangement I listened keenly to the ensuing mathematics as a three bedroomed house attempted to house fifteen million people. Supper having been along the lines five loaves and two fish, I wanted to see what mother dear would do to contain all her immediate relatives. That the Patriarch and the Matriarch were not about to share the room with anyone was obvious. That under no circumstances would female relations share the same room as male relations more so. I listened in stunned amazement as arrangements were made for the third room. A pair of aunts would share one bed. Another pair would share another bed. Three cousins would spend the night on a mattress on the floor. As for the male relations (chiefly uncles) they were consigned to the Servants' Quarter that of late had been the residence of numerous sacks of odds and ends and a hen.

Given the choice of bed companions my smallest brother I fear would be a non starter. My choice most certainly would not be a small boy who has spent the better part of the day being acquainted with garden soil, spiders, dust, flour and other odds and ends. The night itself is one I am keen to forget. Any notions of restful, REM sleep I kissed goodbye five minutes after slipping under the covers with that lad. It is true that blood is thicker than water and if you attempt to harm that little chap you will answer to me but this feeling of concern suffers somewhat when sleeping with a small boy who sweats precipitately, sticks grubby feet into your mouth, helps himself to the entire expanse of quilt and freely gives vent to natural releases that are better off not being released. I slept late and woke up early!

... ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS ...
I would like to thank Me for all the support I have given myself. I am one of a kind and I admire the time I have taken to do this when I could be doing other more interesting things like shelling peas.
Let us not forget Myself for the valuable contribution as well , of course, as I who is indispensable to this project!
There will also be some people who will want to be thanked effusively despite the fact that they have contributed nothing whatsoever. But I will thank them anyway when I can remember their names and when they are actually looking over my shoulder and I have no choice but to thank them for nothing!
