TOURNAMENT FORMAT & RULES
(Coffee Cup March 21-23, 2008)
Note:
Rules and Format are unofficial pending approval by tournament committee
FORMAT:
- 14 teams in 3 divisions (4
Teams in Pool A, 4 Teams in Pool B, and 6 Teams in Pool C)
- 2 points per win, 1 point per
tie (includes shoot-out loss), and 0 points for a loss (player serving
time penalty at end of regulation may shoot unless ejected)
- No Tie games in round-robin:
Sudden Death Shootout (one shooter each until winner - (must not use same
player twice unless all players have shot once)
- 2 Periods (1st
Period - 20 minute Straight Time)
(2nd Period – 15
minute Stop-Time)
- 1 - 30 second time out per
team per game
- 3 minute warm up followed by Serenity Circle
- 3 Division Winners + 1 Wild
Card Team or 4 highest placed teams move into Semi-Finals; Remaining 10
Teams will be placed according to combined standings with the lower placed
team playing the next higher placed team. (Semi-Final: 4 vs 1 &
3 vs 2) (singles 14 vs 13, 12 vs 11, 10 vs 9, 8 vs 7, & 6 vs 5)
- Ties in standings after round
robin will be broken as follows:
1. Winner of the game between two tied teams (if more than 2 teams are tied,
see 2-6 below)
2. Least penalty minutes against (totals of all minors,
majors, and all misconducts - 10 minutes per misconduct including game
misconducts)
3. Most wins
4. Greatest goal difference ("goals for" minus
"goals against" up to a maximum of 7 for or 7 against)
5. Least goals against
6. If we get this far we flip a coin
- No Tie games in round-robin:
Sudden Death Shootout (one shooter each until winner - (must not use same

- Note: Player serving
time penalty at end of regulation may participate in shoot-out unless
ejected
- Tie games in Consolation games (14 vs 13, 12 vs 11, 10 vs 9, 8 vs
7, and 6 vs 5) require 3 player penalty-shot shootout; if still tied then
single extra shots until tie is broken (must not use same player twice
unless all players have shot once)
- Tie games in semi-finals
require 1 - 5 minute, stop time, sudden death, overtime period followed by
a 3 player penalty-shot shootout; if still tied then single extra shots
until tie is broken (must not use same player twice unless all players
have shot once)
- Tie game in championship
final will consist of 10 minute, stop time, sudden death periods (No
Shoot-Out) with a flood after the first over time period or at Ref’s
discretion.
RULES:
- No Body Checking or
unnecessary body contact
- No Slap Shots (blade of the
stick cannot be raised above the knee on back swing - if above knee, face
off reverts back to offending team's end zone with no time penalty (see
CARHA Rule # 78—No Penalty for Coffee Cup Tournament—Warning
Only)
- High Sticking to be strictly
enforced by officials on any bodily contact above the normal height of the
knee
- Red line is NOT in effect
- Blue Line Icing
- High Sticking (Hockey Canada)
- Helmets are mandatory (do not
have to be CSA approved however chinstraps must be fastened)
- Teams may start game with any
number of players in their line up (e.g. 6 skaters and no goalie is
allowed as well as 5 skaters and no goalie providing no skater takes up
the goalies position unless meeting the minimal equipment
requirements—Goalie Gloves, Full Face Helmet, Stick)
- Players may play on more than
1 team only after being randomly selected from available players by the
tournament committee to play for the team making the request
- No mercy rule in effect;
however, straight RUNNING time
after 5 goal spread during the last 5 minutes of the 2nd period
with only the 5 goal spread showing on the scoreboard
- Three (3) Penalties of any
kind will result in a game ejection (e.g. 2 Minors + 1 Misconduct = 3
Penalties or GE56)
- Fighting as well as any
attempt to injure or cause harm, including butt-ending, spearing, and
stick swinging, results in tournament ejection
- Referee's decision is final;
no protests (e.g. 1 game suspension for game misconduct (GM21) for
verbal abuse to officials)
- Hockey Canada Rules apply to
any rules not mentioned above
