December 15, 1998: HOW TO TELL IF YOU NEED OXYGEN WHILE EXERCISING

The minimum blood oxygen level (or saturation) that you should experience when you are exercising is 90%. If you allow your saturation level to go below that point, you could be harming yourself big time.

The saturation level is easily measured with an oximeter. An oximeter is available for $350 to $400 from sources as identified in the "Product Information" section of this web site.

If you do not want to invest the money to buy an oximeter to monitor your own saturation levels, you may go to any doctor and request to have your blood saturation level measured. They will charge you for this service. Maybe $25.

Tell the doctor that you want to walk up and down his office hallways for 5 minutes before he measures your saturation. After you have walked and been tested, if the resulting saturation level is lower than 90%, it is not in your best interests for you to exercise by walking without supplemental oxygen.
