December 14, 1998: MOTIVATING YOURSELF TO EXERCISE

One of the best ways that I know of to motivate yourself to exercise is to keep written records of your performance during exercise.

Let's face it; we all like to keep score. Can you imagine a sporting event where they did not keep score? Would be pretty boring, wouldn't it.

If you are faced with lung disease, the importance of your exercise far exceeds that of a sporting event-so keep score. This will make the exercise more interesting for you and your desire to do better than you did the day before might motivate you to exercise on those days when you "just don't feel like it".

Here's some ideas of the kinds of records to keep on a daily basis

date
total number of minutes exercised
liters per minute of supplementary oxygen used while exercising
minimum and maximum blood oxygen level on your oximeter while exercising
miles walked
