Those with lung disease are most likely to help themselves with an exercise program if they only compete against themselves.
If another that you try to compete against is less disabled or in better physical shape than you are in, it will be unrealistic to try to compete with them. You may actually hurt yourself by becoming discouraged and slacking off on you own exercise program.
If, on the other hand, you try to compete with another who is more disabled or in worse physical shape than you, you may also harm yourself by not pushing yourself as hard as you can and your improvement will be less than it could be.
If you compete only with yourself however, you have a reliable yardstick to gauge how you are doing from day to day and are the most likely to improve your condition.
