Ron Baker's Home Page

Welcome to the Ron Baker Home Page!!

Thanks for dropping in.  Don't expect a lot of bells and whistles.  Just a bio, some photos, and links to "real" websites.  I update this site periodically with new photos and links to my favorites, so come back and check it out again sometime.

I was born in Texas many, many moons ago.  Oh Baby !  I recently moved back to to the Lone Star State after living in California for fourteen years.  I moved to the San Diego area in 1991.   I don't know if S.D. is really "America's Finest City", but I can tell you it was pretty damn fine!   I made a point of getting down to the beach almost every day for a run, walk, or maybe just a little "wave meditation".

I regret having to leave all that fine California scenery, but I think the good people and quality of life in Austin will make up for it.  Thanks to my good friends in San Diego for a fun and memorable time of my life.  I will miss you, but I'm pretty sure that I'll run into some of you again down the road.

I have a pretty diverse background having moved around a lot growing up.   I lived in Texas, Chicago, Ohio, back to Chicago, Toronto, back to Chicago, returned to Texas for 14 years, and then on to California for the next 14, and now back in Texas .  I have a broad education and employment history.  I've received two business degrees from:

I've had a variety of jobs since college, mostly in the financial field.  I did tax accounting and a variety of other projects for the past several years.  I have also done occasional work in the TV, film, and music industries.  I currently work for a large educational institution in Austin  (I know, really hard to guess this one).

My other interests include:  Music, art, movies, photography, sports, fitness, wildlife and the great outdoors.  I'm a former competitive runner and marathoner (a long time ago).  I still get out for regular runs and workouts at the gym to stay in some kind of shape.  I enter an occasional race for fun, but I usually limit my "racing" to shorter distances.  My 10th (and probably last) marathon was the San Diego Rock-n-Roll Marathon back in the late 90's.  It wasn't fast or pretty, but at least I completed the 26.2 miles running  (as opposed to crawling).

I love music of all kinds - from blues, rock, country and bluegrass to jazz, latin and classical.  I also love being outdoors and experiencing nature;  I go to the ocean, desert, and mountains whenever possible because these are the places where I feel closest to God.  I'm currently landlocked, but I was fortunate to have lived less than a mile from the beach for most of my time in California . . . .

and only a few hours from the mountains and desert . . . .

Or if I really wanted to get out there, I could always make a run for the border . . . .

Baja y Cabo son Muy Hermosos!!

My family members are spread out all over North America.  My mom and dad are retired and living the good life in North Carolina.  They have a very nice home there and have been avid sailers for many years.  There are four sons in our family, and I'm #3 in the order.  My oldest brother David and his wife are artists in Texas (see link below).  My next oldest brother Mark and his wife live in Canada with their two sons.  My younger brother Sam and his wife are in Illinois with their two daughters.  Then I have aunts, uncles and cousins in Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida.  We're all spread out, but we stay in-touch and have periodic family reunions.

I already mentioned that I moved to the San Diego area in 1991.  I met my ex-wife in Dallas, and we moved to S.D. where she grew up.  We split-up way back in 1996, but fortunately we're still friends and have plenty of respect for each other.  I also lost my father in 1996.  He was a good ol' boy from Texas, who I came to know, love and appreciate in his later years (I grew up with my mom and step-dad).  He enjoyed life and made lots of friends along the way.  I only wish he could have stayed around longer.  In addition to working for a large electronics company for 35 years, he was also a drummer in a blues band.  I definitely inherited his love of music.  Although I'm not a musician, I do like to crank the tunes, go to concerts, dance, and even bang on the drums every now and then.  Music is a very important part of my life (see the links and photos below).  I've always had an attraction to musicians and artists;  I enjoy the company of creative and entertaining people.  There seems to be some kind of mental and emotional connection that I just can't deny.

Fate has presented some ups and downs in recent years, but the future looks promising.  It's so bright I gotta wear shades.  I'm enjoying life; there are lots of good people and beautiful places out there to enjoy.   Life is too damn short, and I want to make the most of every day!!

Finally, for the benefit of any friends of Bill W. who found their way here, he and I have been friends since 1984.  Be sure to say hello if we ever meet on the "Road of Happy Destiny".

To be continued . . . . .
